Its my understanding that the perch has eyes specially adapted to pick up red more that any other colour and they can see in very low light levels so are the last fish to turn to non visual stimulii as night draws in. If other preditors (such as barbs) have similar "natural super powers" doesn't that make a mockery of red line? I've found red carp line in snags and its like a rope, surely if they cant see it they must feel it?
Personally I think the trick is to keep your angled mainline as far from the hook bait as possible and have what ever line you use from hook to last weight before the "angled" as hard on the bottom as possible. Maybe I am wrong, who knows so I guess we all better get out to the tackle shop and spend more money on another gimmick, sorry I mean technological development!
