There so many different animal feeds out there for cows, sheep, pigs etc and I've heard of a couple before being used for fishing like Ewe nuts for example, which you can get for about £5 per 25kg

i know that alot of carpers use goat feed as it has loads of things that u would buy from the tackle shop in it like pulses and particles like flaked and whole maize and it even has CSL pellets in it. Ive been told that cow feed smells similar to nutrtabaits trigga boilies because it has similar things in it like yeast powders and liver powders ive been trying to get hold of some but no luck yet.

Hi men ,
avoid sugar beet pellets , they soak up vast amounts of liquid , and i think would damage fish ( as they would horses )if they found their way into a fish quickly. Now flaked beet ( speedie beet ) , added to hemp Hatter |

hatter's is right. I tried to soak some because the sugar beet nuts were bigger than catfish pellets. they went crazy in the bucket and started fermenting and producing heat as the absorbed the water. I wouldn't use them again. I'm hoping to get some cow cake again for the summer, a mate has cows and they pay £70 per tonne for the cake, so it's cheap for a few kgs.

"Hi men ,

Hi All,
Having just dropped off the carp scene I can add my bit here. If you want a particle type mix then you cannot go wrong with pidgeon feed, it contains pulses and seeds such as maples,corn,maize etc. I used to soak over night in a cool box, one of the big plastic ones, just cover the particles with boiling water and leave overnite and they will be ready for use. You will have to top up the water level as the particle soaks up the water............... you can add flavours at this stage as well. With regard to a groundbait type feed then have a look at the dog food Vitalin. It comes in 15kg bags and costs about a tenner. This stuff is magic, binds well and you can make your balls of feed as hard as you like. it contains mainly flaked maize and bonemeal and does have its own unique smell. Best way to prepare it is to mix wet particle in with it and leave overnight... its then damp enough to ball up. Obviously you will need to experiment to get the mix as you want it. You can add pellet to the mix before anything wet goes in. Hope this helps. |

Not sure I'd recommend goat feed as suggested at the top of this thread. I've got a couple of goats which relish the Argo goat feed I feed them on but it is very 'heavy' and sweet and I'm not sure how good it would be for the water throwing large amounts in. In any event I tried it in moderation for the normally obliging carp on the canal that runs by my house and it was OK but nothing special.
To be honest the commercial carp style particle feeds are such good value in larger quantities that I'm not certain its worth experimenting anyway. Kev |

Soft Bill Mix is killer on canals to attract the bigger bream, carp like it too, it needs a good soak. Horse food mollasis is really good at getting fish into your swim, if they like sweet food. I really dont think that these baits are that good for barbel/chub though, they are much more a bream/tench/carp bait

hi,richard,sorry but i cant believe you have put this post up regading animal feeds,and maybe looking for some ingriedients for a super bait[if thats the right word]there just isnt one,and never will be.
the best ingredient you can have is to find the fish first,then present a good bait at the right time[when there feeding]and maybe fish with particles at the start of the season the kind of food items they have been eating in the close season.regards derek. |

Re: Animal Feeds | ||

My Dear Derek, I am neither trying to find a super bait or looking for short cuts, as you imply my good man. I am merely trying to cut down on my bait bills, which I can no longer afford due to personal circumstances. I agree there is no super bait and I am loathed to pay the over inflated prices that some baits retail at, when there are other alternatives. I used to buy hemp seed in jars for £6.99 for 2.5kg, today I bought 20kg of uncooked hemp from a local animal feed supplier for £12, saving me some £43.92. I believe that many pellets are over priced too, hence why I'm looking into buying bulk animal feed pellets. Derek, I walked 7 miles of river bank on Sunday and 5 miles on Wednesday, in search of barbel, I will doing this just about every week until the season starts, infact I'll be out tomorrow, I don't think you can say that I'm a short cut merchant mate, I am, as I always have been since I start barbel fishing, fully committed to there pursuit.

Quote: Like,hydropsyche larva, Rhyacophila larvae, mayfly nymphs, Gammarus shrimp, snails, bloodworm etc, I've been turning over plenty of rocks and done some kick sampling in my local rivers, I suppose I could collect them all, liquidize them and make boilies out of them |

ijjak,this is my local feed merchant's fishing page www.hutchfeeds.co.uk/ProdPage.htm, their animal feeds are equally reasonable,I'm sure you will find one locally who can compete.I find them to be of good quality,and a great saving on fishing shops.

hi,short cut merchant aye,dont think i put that up richard.as regards the hemp,thats a good price £12,as i used to pay £16 a sack from the local pet shop.
glad you do the walks to look for the barbel,the hardest part is if you have walked a long way to find them,then go back to get your tackle and do it all again. for what its worth here is a list of the baits i will be using. sweetcorn-boilies-maggots/casters-and thats it. oh yes nearly forgot,i know the best way to catch them now, IME GOING FISHING EVERYDAY.regards derek. |

Re: Animal Feeds | ||

hi,richard its not always a luxury finding barbel,and then watching them swiming over leftover bait from other anglers sessions,without picking up any of the bait,in fact it can be very frustrating,not being able to get a take,no matter what you try.
anyway thats the challenge isnt it.the other challenge is the 8lb plus chub that inhabit the avon.ill have to wait and see what jewels the avon turns up this season,you just never know in fishing.regards derek. |
