For smaller rivers like the Derwent or Dove i'll use 1 rod with a quiver tip but i'll use 2 rods with Avon tops on larger rivers like the Trent. Cheers, Leigh

So i can see any movement on the tip and then i know my bait is free from snags ie cabbages and weed. Then change 2 my avon tip in the Winner when the rivers are up, running faster or flooded ,that gives me more backbone in the rod to cope with conditions. Also change from Mono to Braid in the winter months. So left my vote open. Tight Lines and Happy Barbel Fishing.Nigel (For next season now)

I my self use the quiver all summer and as long as I can intill the flood water becomes to much and I have to switch to the avon top. Rich

But I would say that one of the best articles in our archives is by Dick and is entitled "quivering blue jeans" , well worth a read. paul4

Chub will still pull it off the rest ...barbel just take it as theres no resistance.. .... Whack and the rod is gone...

Posts: 1725 (07/04/07 11:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hi,albert i have to say that i havnt seen a bait chewed,apart from maggots that where sucked,which suggests to me was small stuff. what i have seen on occasions is barbel picking a bait up,and dropping it without moving,and the only method to hook them is to site fish,and not every one can do that. the other way is what i use albert,which you dont agree with using,so i wont coment on it. the other point about the stiff tip on an avon rod i dont quite get,i use 2mrk4 avon rods now,1r/w and a b/w,err designed for fishing for barbel on the h.a.cheers derek.

My Barbel rod registers even the most sensitive of bites. My rod was bought without a quivertip section,and in the years I`ve owned it I`ve never had need for it, even when the Barbel were shy. I`ve handled quite a few Barbel rods in certain tackle shops and a good majority of them are way to stiff. A good rod should be sensitive and forgiving but have plenty of power in the butt section. Alot of rods nowadays especially Barbel and Carp are virtually like broom handles. Anglers nowadays tend to be totally besotted with test curves. The bigger the test curve the better!!,Ok if the situation needs it but in most cases it doesn`t.

Quivers are of little use to me in my chosen styles of barbel fishing. But I'll add this much... Obviously they will register 'bites' easier than an avon top, indicating fish are about. which is nice to see...and alerts you in readiness for a possible take? The only thing is, I'm not interested in 'bites' ...only in proper 'takes'! Fine, if you want to hit the slightest bite...or even decide on a formula of 1-2-3-strike! for that given day, you will obviously catch the odd barbel or two as well as any other fish that might be having a nibble. You may even get very lucky, as Albert, and catch your biggest ever barbel? But in my opinion, you will always only of ever actually succeed in spooking 10x that amount of barbel by hitting the odd bite! Because of this fact, I actually catch very few chub or other 'nuisance' species when barbel fishing...ask Mookie...what was the barbel to chub count when he came and fished with me for three days? I have the John Wilson Barbel system ad it comes supplied with 3 quivers and an avon tip which I always thought was for Float fishing, please help. Ricky
