Does size matter? |

A month and a bit away from the new season something has caught my mind,i spent last year going after some very big barbel due to a relocation i will now be fishing a river that has a few barbel in and the average is about 5,6 pounds.I love the challenge of a new water pioneering a new swim putting plans in place and catching any barbel puts the icing on the cake.So i was wandering what do people consider to holds more value a big barbel from water that has a lot of barbel in or any barbel from a water with not many in?

Yes!! to beat you pb is a great acheivement!!. However you do, i think have to take this into perspective when considering what river you are fishing. As we know there are some truly massive fish in certain rivers which are highly sought after. But by catching the same fish just one or two ounces bigger is that as great a feat as catching say a double from the wandle(my local) or a twelve/thirteen from the mole or lodden???And you should also consider cost and hours put in as these all go to making a fair size fish into something to remember for a long time.

Hi All
I think everyone how goes Barbel fishing would like to beat there PB and catch Big Fish. But you have to be in the area or the right River and feeding. So some times it great fun to catch any size and just enjoy your fishing and are great river. Tight Lines and Happy Barbel Fishing.Nigel (For the new Season) |

Well said Paul...............I fish for bites, try to convert every one into a fish on the bank, enjoy the session and hope for a new PB. I could not do as many do and spend session after session blanking for the quest of that one monster fish. In my experience, the best sport comes from barbel in the 7-10lb bracket, most of the 12, 13, 14's I have caught have chugged along the bottom and not scrapped half as well as the smaller fish.

Hmmmmm,
Interesting question really.........If I could catch a Barbel of any size from a virgin / lightly stocked water I'd be well made up and would have a great sense of achievement. HOWEVER, could I trade that for a 15-17lber from a river such as The Kennet, then there would be no contest I'm afraid A fish of say 13-14lb from The Marden would just as credible(if not more so IMHO) and would give me more satisfaction than that......(pretty unlikely as it is.....) All in all, a difficult one to answer...... Cheers Paul M......... |

For me it's the challenge, if 5 to 6lbs was the average in the water, and 8's were like rocking horse dung, then i'd be after them, but for some it's about catching any old Barbel that takes their bait, and why not. Ask yourself this - am i enjoying my fishing, if you can say yes, it's the only thing that matters at all.

Quote: It certainly is. I beat my PB 4 times last season and equaled it 3 times. Excited? yes, over the moon.--Then that little gremlin gets into your head, "you could beat this before the end of the season",. And it can take over and easily become an obsession. Time to take a deep breath, take yourself off to a stretch of river that you know holds a good head of smaller fish. 'Strewth', these fish fight like hell and they are only 5-7lb., what a great days' fishing. In other words, bring your self down to earth now and again. At the end of the day it's all about catching our favourite fish and having that rod bent over.----John. |

Hi men ,
Me and sue go fishing for barbel . Given the choice , it would be to a smallish river , clear water conditions so we could watch them .Work out a plan to catch a fish . Then if swim makeing ,buzzards , hares , tree creepers , deer, barn owls , sunrise / sunsets, or even watching barbel in THEIR own elliment stopped us , we would not be to bothered Hatter |

If you do decide to use 2lb bottom as advised, then don't forget to take plenty of line with you, as you will need it. Not to mention several packets of hooks, as you will need those too.

As I have got older I have found that the quest for numbers and size deminishes.
These days I'm happy to catch whats in front of me. P.s. Last year I had 186 to exactly 10lb, this year my target is 200 and I need a 12 to fill the gap between an 11.6 and my pb 13.2 |

Last season I adopted a more sicentific approach to my barbel fishing. Only venturing out when conditions were right, water temp, air pressure, etc, etc.....
The result was noticable only 3 barbel under 9 pounds and 11 doubles. I enjoyed myself immensely and although I didnt catch the numbers of fish I have in previous seasons the quality was outstanding. I set new river pbs for all 4 of the rivers I fished. In the past I have felt that size doesnt matter, I have reviewed that. I now fish at least 2/3's less than I did the season before and when I am on the bank I want to catch a decent size fish. Last season has shown me that this can be acheived as long as I stick by the old "conditions" rule. |

Does catching anything matter? Well I guess it does. Yesterday I didnt catch a thing piking the lake but had a much better time than Saturday pulling in little commons on a commercial; why was that? The barn owl silently floating past, the greylags with gooslings sat at the next peg, swallows and martins flying past that close they were almost under the brollie, blackbirds so close you could hear the wing beats, huge tench & carp rolling infront of me (ok that was just taking the mick because I'd left the avon and worms at home!)
With the boris, just catching one is my aim. In one river I fish size doesnt matter because in the swims I have got I could count the head of fish on my hands and toes. On other stretchs of another river then I will be hoping for doubles. I think blanking is part of the fun as long as its not every trip, where's the fun in catching huge fish everytime? There would be no challenge and I think thats what fishing is all about, the challenge (and being out the house). |

I rarely fish for numbers (i mean how many five pounders do you need)? and usually finding myself trying to catch bigger barbel. However, I usually judge my success by how happy a fish or session has made me and that can be because of a pb, new river best, first fish from a new river, first double from a new river, it scrapped like nothing before it and gave me a soaking when i put it back, pleasant surroundings or circumstances of capture, new rig, bait or method etc. As i get older, its happiness i seek and not necessarily the biggest fish. I still get a lot of satisfaction nailing a scrappy nine pounder from the teme, whereas on another river that fish would almost be run of the mill.

I think that is the whole point of the thread. To many of us five pounders are bread and butter with the odd bit of jam in the shape of an eight or nine. A double from the rivers I fish is Sunday tea, salmon sandwiches, jelly and ice cream, peaches and evaporated milk and a battenburg cake and long may it remain. Viva le difference, (or whatever it is they say in Spain). |
