Hi to you all! |

|
Just joined this forum and thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Chris from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. I'm pretty new to Barbel fishing but I'm determined to get 1 or 2 this season. If anyone can give me any advise on where to catch Barbel in the North East, North Yorkshire area on a day ticket or any decent clubs worth joining I'd be very grateful.
Cheers, Chris! |

Hi Fishhead
Welcome to Barbel Fighting World! We are a very friendly Bunch who like nothing better then having a verbal punch up at every opportunity! Don't expect to many Welcoming messages because we are a little weary of newbies......!!! Just a word of warning make sure you have a unhooking mate cos if you Don't.......well read the threads to see what I mean! Ps very advisable to fill in your profile as some are very touchy about that sort of thing apart from that welcome and happy scrapping!! |

Your best bet for Barbel fishing near you is the river Swale around Catterickand Cundall. There are plenty of day ticket stretches around here.
Ijakk is the best man to speak to. |

Cheers for the welcome lads! I do have an unhooking mat Kevin so I'll definately take it with me when I go Barbel fishing. Not that I'll probably use it though!
I will fill in my profile aswell. I do a lot of fishing for carp so i know how to handle big fish. I need to try something new in fishing, that's why I'm taking up Barbelling. I think they're one of the best looking fish there is! I know there are fish in the Wear (which is the closest river to me that holds Barbel), but I don't know where abouts they are caught. Also the Tees does but I'm unfamiliar to that river also. Plus I don't think you can get day tickets. Anyway Cheers people and any advise is welcome CHRIS |

hi fish head you may find it difficult to get the people on here to narrow down your search much more than you allready know because they have spent a long time finding their spots but try having a look in the river reports section and you may find a few things failing that try the tackle shop closest to your chosen river you will find them a great help for the price of a few pellets

Hello Chris, I,m pretty much in the same boat as you mate.(I,m even from gateshead as well). I've been out twice on the river Wear at the back end of last season, in an attempt to catch my first barbel. Failed miserably both times. When the Wear river reports thread is back up and running, try asking for advice on there, as despite fishing for 25 years, I realised there are so many other anglers who know so much more than I do. I will be trying harder than ever this season to get a barbel in my net, (and on my mat). Good luck to you.

Hi men ,
Hi Chris , Best thing to do is have a look , and walk along a known stretch . I know ( all us southerners do ) that your rivers up there are still frozen over , so you may need a ice saw to make some holes untill julys thaw Just ribbing mate , lots of nice people on here , someone will point you in the right direction . Check the river reports out , and local tackle shops. I was jokeing about Julys thaw , I know its June Hatter |

Hi Tinca Tinca, I've tried the Wear myself and had the same result. 3 times I've been there and not a bite!
Do you do any other kind of fishing? I fish a few still waters but you can't beat the river in my opinion. But I'm still very much a novice at fishing them. Hi Hatterbarbel, The rivers up here are still frozen solid mate. We had a bit of a thaw yesterday, but it was minus 15 last night so back to square one. Hi Cornovii, Any size Barbel will do. I'll be happy with a couple of pound as long as I get a Barbel mate! |

Hi Chris,
As with any species, location is the key. Find some fish and if you don't scare them with a poor approach, they'll be as good as yours matey. Being a carper you'll know only to well, how true that can be! Find a stretch that has 'form'(through tackle shops or walking and asking other anglers on the banks). Then don't go and fish straight away. In the ideal world, you can see barbel easily enough if you put a few pellets in and just watch. But this may not be possible on your local waters due to depth and/or colouration? If this is the case? Try to visit early and late (dawn and dusk) if you can? Barbel will 'show' at these times just like carp and other species. But the easiest way will be by word of mouth! Like most fishes, barbel like cover, overhanging trees, rubbish rafts, Fallen trees, streamer weed, undercut banks etc. Target just above these features and draw the fish out to your bait. Keep everything simple bud, running lead or feeder, don't over do the feed and halibut pellet or meat on a hair rig. Plenty of time to go techno later! I think I'll speak for a lot of guys n gals here, when I say, in a strange way...I envy you your quest for that first barbel matey...it's something you will never forget! I can still remember my first barbel mission over twenty year ago now...magical! Good luck and let us all know how you go on. Dazza. |

I'm a bit of an all rounder when it comes to my fishing, but I'm a coarse angler first and foremost. Whereabouts did you fish on the Wear?, as Ill be heading back down there again when the season starts and I'm looking for stretches to target. I tried the free stretch at Ferens Park.

Re: Hi to you all! | ||

I fished Fenens Park aswell Tinca Tinca. I've spoke to people who recon they've had some good fish from there mainly Chub though. There's an excellent stretch for Dace on the Hotel stretch (forgot the name) but as for Barbel I've only heard of fish coming from the Chester Le Street club water. £70 to join and a hell of a waiting list.
To be honest I'll probably be going down the Swale as I know there's a good head of them in there. I know a couple of day ticket stretches so I'll give them a go and let you know how I get on. Cheers for that advise Cornovii. I'll definately take it onboard. No point getting technical before I know how and where to catch them. Cheers Chris. |

Re: Hi to you all! | ||

Best of luck mate when you hit the swale. Let me know how you get on. I think I'll keep trying a little closer to home. Perhaps give the stretch of the Wear at Finchale priory a go. I don't know how big the barbel are there, but I just need to get a fish under my belt to get me started. All the research and planning is half the fun. You're right about there being good chub on the Ferens Park stretch, as I saw them rolling on the surface just on dark. Couldn't catch them though. cheers Tinca.
