Posts: 196 (09/02/07 00:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None third time I have typed this!!! lost twice so far. what do I go for: greys prodigy 1.5 barbel twin tip? or greys x-flite 1.5/1.75? or prodigy 1.5 + prodigy 1.75? I fish the medway in kent, a small river that contains some decent fish. I am not just into barbel, but anything decent that eats worms for breakfast. I'd rather not spend more than I really need to, but I don't want to go half-cocked. I cannot justify a better quality rod, as limited experience and size 12 feet would doom it within weeks. effectively with the x-flite you are paying £70 extra for one more top section. is the rod that much better than the prodigy? can you recommend a fixed spool reel to match the rod? budget around £40, maybe a little more. nothing recent or definitives on the faq's that I can find. your wisdom appreciated. dan

Posts: 1567 (09/02/07 00:26) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Can I throw another one or two in the works Greys Specialist at about £90 - the 1.25 Top gives you a Chub and Barbel rod. - the 1.75 will cope with big water and snaggier stretches But no Quiver Or look to the offers about on the TFG range the 12ft 1.25 or 1.5 Signature Quiver and Avon top at £50! see: www.tacklebargains.co.uk/ They also do the John Wilson Signature Avon for £70 but I know nothing about that other than it tries to meet many aims. Both the Greys and the TFGs get good reviews and for £50 I cannot find a better deal than the TFG Signature series. As for reels for that money look for an Okuma Epix Pro 40 without the baitrunner and pay a bit more for the Baitrunner facility if needed. -- Dr Barbus There's a world of difference between waiting and sitting.

Posts: 367 (09/02/07 01:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	If you're not just into Barbel and if you don't quiver tip favouring an isotope as adequate bite indication and for around that price range I would be looking at the Prodigy Specimen www.greysfishing.com or the Korum Neoteric 12' Twin Tip www.korum.co.uk/ Both i'd say are versatile.

Posts: 196 (09/02/07 01:32) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	just when you think you've narrowed it down.... looking at the greys website,they now charge £25 per section per claim, which when you look at total number of sections per rod is not all that far off full price, you may as well have a second rod for spares! at least you can fish both then. thanks for your input guys. if anyone can feedback on the x-flite, I'd be grateful.

In the barbel range the Xflite does seem nicer. I am biased though,the Korum twin tips are terrific and better than both. Pons.

If I was re-buying I would probably look for something with 1 1/2 & 2 lb top sections with no quiver option. Can't fault them in fish playing terms

At the risk of boring you all, would you say that there is enough difference between, say, a 1.5 and a 1.75 tip (or 1.25 and 1.5) to merit having both? or is a gap of 0.5 more useful, e.g. 1.5 + 2.0, or 1.25 + 1.75? No doubt if money is no object, you have the lot. for most of us, definitely inc me, wedge is limited. hence I am anxious to make a good choice. your help (and patience) appreciated. dan

Out of interest did it come complete with the guarentee card?

I bought a Prodigy Specialist (1.25 + 1.75 avon tips) and then later, when I wanted to fish two rods, I got a Barbel 1.5 (1.25 avon + quiver top with 3 quivers). I use all four options in various circumstances: * 1.25 and 1.5, normal conditions, * 1.5 and 1.75, heavier conditions (faster flow, flood, etc.) * 1.25 + quiver, if I fancy using a quiver The lifetime guarantee is worth having - I have had the tip of my 1.25 replaced already when it just broke in the bag. A friend has also had a tip break. I've also managed to break a quiver tip (braid wrapped round it - snap!) and knacker the reel seat (tightened up too much on a centre pin that was too big - bugger!) but have not replaced those yet since I have two more quivers and the reel seat still works. As for reels, I bought the Shimano Aero GTE5000B (and then bought another one for my second rod!). Not the cheapest, but excellent reels. Paul at York Carp Centre is competetive, especially on the rods. He has a shop on eBay. R.

The TFG Signature 1.25 meets that and at £50 you are not out by much. If you then want to up your rods for Barbel later it will cope for all but heavy flood water and snag fishing. It also means that you have a decent Chub/Roach/Perch rod. And for the price of the Greys you have the rod and reel! -- Dr Barbus There's a world of difference between waiting and sitting.

I thought the x-flite felt better - more power, smoother bend. However, it's £160.00 - you can nearly buy two prodigys for the same money. So I did! R.

They seem to have alot more backbone to them than the hyperloops and feel better. Would have bought the x-flites but when your on a limited budget, and the wife would devorce me if I went out and spent over 300 squid on just 2 rods. They are just the job in my opinion

Posts: 196 (10/02/07 20:34) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	sincere thanks to all who have contributed. the advice here is a lot more useful than magazine reviews, for obvious reasons. the plan is to get the greys prodigy specimen, and maybe add the prodigy 1.5 or x-flite 1.5/2.0 later. since I need other stuff as well, I have to cap the budget. it looks like I am going to buy through fishtec, who do interest-free credit, depending on how much you spend. their prices aren't too bad, either. thanks again - your opinions are genuinely respected. I feel that I've learnt a lot about barbel fishing just through this thread. If I haven't gone with your advice, please accept that it was crucial to the thought process, and may have been the right choice in different circumstances. dan

A Enterprise Avon isotope adaptor with an isotope of you're choice say something good like a Solar Fluoro isotope is perfectly adequate in day/night conditions. The Specimen tips are responsive enough to do away with quivers I think.
