Posts: 329 (23/01/07 12:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Morning All Sorry to start yet another subject, one im sure has been started before no doubt. What line do you guys use? Im on Braid at the moment but listening to a horror story when out with scuba steve made me think its time to change from braid. As you probably all know by now, i fish the Bristol Avon where sometimes the fish can be really spooky, what line would be best for easily spooked fish AND cut through when you've finally hooked one! Thanks again guys, really appreciate your feedback and patience. Mark

To be honest I get as many bite's on both. I don't even think line colour bother's them as I use a brown mono.The only thing with fluro is it's not suited for every not or every bodys way of tying them.(Or is it just me?) Rich

Posts: 482 (23/01/07 13:17) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've moved from braid to mono for my main line for these "dirty" months as I find my Berkley Fireline collects more flotsam than mono. I still use Whiplash for lake/canal carping as it is more sensitive to gentle winter bites. I have also found that for close in "hook and hold" fishing mono's stretch is a benefit when playing a fish. I do like braid and when the water is clearer and the plant life has grown back I will switch back to the braid so that it cuts out of the snags. I have found that flouro and braid hook links make very little difference. Flouro in the cold is a little siff. I prefer coated braids but it can be hard to find them under 12lb bs, just can't win! Standard mono mainline I don't think is good for hair rigs as it feels a bit "sharp" and I worry it may damage the fishes mouth, fluro and coated braids are much thicker, so less like a cheese wire. Saying that in a carp mag this month was an interesting rig using 5 strands of 3lb mono for a hair rig so it is less visible, not sure about that. I did use a fluro mainline for a while but didnt like the cast or the lay of the line when it was out in the water, it was terrible with a float. Knots; the only knot I would use with braid is the palomar, anything else (in my experience) will slip or cut through itself.

Although it is a little stiffer than most copolymer/mono line's, it is around 70% heavier and therefore will sink far quicker than other lines including sinking braid mainlines. The other benefit is that it is far more resistant to abrasion and will probably last twice as long as normal mono/copolymer. The diameter is about on par with most other mono lines pound for pound and surprisingly for me, (i'm now a convert) it is very strong. Fluoros seem to have come a long way in the last few years and are far more reliable than early attempts. I use a palomar with fox illusion and havent had any problems. Just to add that you wouldnt be wanting to use a heavy fluoro line when float fishing as it will disturb your presentation. Wurzel

Every now and again (usually paste fishing in the floods) I may switch to a braid hooklength but its no more than two or three times a season. By three methods we may learn the wisdom to catch barbel: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.-(Apologies to Confucius!)

Sue has 12 krystonite , but I think she has been converted now . Don,t think you can say that one line is good for all situation,s , and I have 12lb gr60 on one spool .As i come from a carping background , I know this line has been underated , and breaks at a much higher b.s. , so in fact I know it is a spool of at least 16lb b.s. . Not used it this season though , and in the low , clear condition,s only used x-line . Hatter

Not worth the money Look here if you don't believe me under the (line tests) link half way down the page but I have tested this myself and also my local tackle dealer. www.tacklebox.co.uk/ Another point is that recently, it has come to light that fluorocarbon actually is more prone to pick up floating debris, scum, etc than any other type of line and after several minutes in the river become just as visible as any other line, if not more so. These results where uncovered by Stuart Morgan whilst diving and revealed to me recently by a member of this site, although as I understand it, there has been talk of this going round for sometime before that.

This season I have changed over to dawia sensor clear, which is not only cheap but just as good, if not better than any of these more expensive so called wonder lines. Rich

Posts: 1567 (23/01/07 19:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The X-line rating is way off and for a 0.28mm line (ostensibly 12lb bs) it breaks at 9 to 9.5 lb. Big Game 10lb is 0.29mm and breaks at 13 to 13.5lb. Guess which is preferred. The Sensor Clear 10lb is 0.30mm and breaks at 15 to 16lb. As for Krystonite, I found the same as rich - been there, tried that and not going back there again - at least on my local snag infested yorkshire rivers, trent, ribble, severn or anywhere else I end up on the day. It just is not resiliant and the flouro coating flakes badly. But for BIG Water and holding out in the main flow you need thin diameter and for that reason I now carry spare spools geared up with PowerPro 9kg which is 0.15mm - it means I can hold out in the flow with less weight. Posts: 146 (23/01/07 19:17) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Rich, Not saying your info is wrong but my experience is totally different, X-Line was originally recommended to me by Steve Fantuzi of Yately Angling and Big Carp Guru, has also done various barbel fishing articles, he has been using it exclusively for 2 seasons now and absolutely swears by the stuff, give him a call, I had problems when I first started with the line springing off and looping up, discussed with Steve and he pointed out that the spooling diagram in the box with the line is wrong, I re-spooled and have not had an issue at all since then. My bite rate has definitely increased in clear water (maybe a confidence thing) since using X line. I use as main line, normally use drennan micro braid hooklings, although this is getting rare in the tackle shops.........hope drennan haven't stopped making it!!! You will severely reduce the BS of fluorocarbon if the wrong knots are employed, half bloods for example are a big no, no, must use grinners and lubricate well when tightening. Ian.
