if you can find them i wouldn`t hesitate to reccomend the Fred Crouch jobbies, by no means the biggest around but quite stealthy and the only ones i can consistantly land on the money be it at 5 yds or 25 yds

Remember seeing some prototype fox plastic ones in one of the rags - anybody seen these in the shopsor have they been shelved? I like to use tiny little ones and lower in a few times - each mimicking the pva bag or stringer which will ultimately go in with the hookbait.

Andy, they've been in all the mags (I read far too many of them for my own good - and wallet), but I was in a very large tackle shop yesterday that's (a Premier Fox dealer) and they didn't have them in yet. Fox have just released a new Carp catalogue. It's attached to the current issue of Advanced Carp magazine.

All The Bait Droppers You need | ||
|
Google on "Bait droppers" and you will find a variety.
Seymo do three sizes (2oz, 4oz and 8oz) all metal green tear drop style www.harrisonstackle.com/a...s_180.html I use these - the big ones require substantial rods to use! The Brass Preston droppers are available in three sizes: see www.fostersofbirmingham.co.uk/ST28688 I use these too. The Keenets Brass ones are in three sizes too: www.try-angling.co.uk/Sho...ccessories Searcher Bait Dropper from Free Spirit Fishing see: www.specialist-tackle.co....bcatid=100 The plastic ones appear to have gone from the market - I have one left. Alternatively you can make your own: The BFW site lists one at Link Roger Millar's Complete Barbel describes how to as well. -- Dr Barbus

I have the large seymo one very good but quite heavy good for putting substantional beds of bait down but I would buy the middle size if I had tested them first...

I use the Fred Crouch ones or sometimes the Thamesley, (spelling?), plastic ones, (I have two left), but I also have one made from one of those teardrop shaped tins of ham which holds about a pint and another made from a big Cadburys roses chocolate tin which I use for tope fishing.

Surely, PVA has relegated bait droppers to the garden shed.

Doug,
I would assume it would be hard to lay a bed of hemp down,via a PVA bag? But do try and let us know how you get on. |

I'm sure you could lay a bed of hemp down with PVA bags. Might be by your feet though.

SOLID PVA BAGS | ||

Try Solid PVA Bags, or you could use hemp pellets, hemp oil.
With a bit of luck Guy Robb might post on how he used bags in his videos. Failing that here's a goood article by one of our posters. www.barbel.co.uk/site/art...ations.htm |

Interesting.......I can't imagine how I'd put a gallon or two of hemp down (which I do regularly by the way) using PVA bags be they solid or mesh.

Re: SOLID PVA BAGS | ||

I understand your logic, we used to fish the Severn using 8 pints of maggots gallons of hemp and it worked.
Nowadays however, pellets are a much more affordable way to fish and outfish the maggot, caster and hemp method in MOST circumstances. Agreed not always. Des Taylor even says the same in last weeks Angling Times. It just begs the question of how you are most comfortable fishing. We changed eventually to the pva bags and pellets when the locals advised us to as our catch rates had dropped and bingo we were catching again. On smaller more intimate rivers, a pole and cup and better for dropping the groundbait in the required area and then put your rig in the cup and feed the pole right under the tree, killer method. It's not traditional but it works. |

Re: SOLID PVA BAGS | ||

And that's the crux, it depends on where and how you're fishing.
If I'm on the Trent / Severn and my target is anything up to 35/40 barbel in a session and there are countless 'nuisance' bream and chub then I will minimize the pellet and go heavy on the hemp/particle. There's nothing those slimy slabs like more than pellets! If I'm fishing a smaller, more intimate river or in certain large river situations then the approach can vary from baitdropper work to single bait or 2/3 boilie stringer fishing. But for feeding large quantities of anything in deep, powerful rivers then baitdroppers or modified monster feeders are the only way to go. |

Re: SOLID PVA BAGS | ||

By the way -
20/25kg of decent pellet = £25 to £35 20kg of hemp = £8 to £14 20kg of paticle mix = £10 to 12 20kg of groats = £8 to £10 I know which I'll be feeding in bulk |

Re: SOLID PVA BAGS | ||

And I'm not feeding or fishing caster/maggot unless I like catching chublets or eels.

Hi All,
I used PVA solid bags the last couple of years but it gets costly so I just want a small dropper for when I'm not fishing feeder or I want to feed up a swim that I know holds fish but they dont give up to easy.One or two dropper full's and jobs done then after that it's back to the hand thrown half dozen free be's. Thanks for all your help I'll be looking into it later today. Rich |

Re: BAIT DROPPERS | ||

I started to fish the lower Severn a bit last season and I am struggling with ways to put bait down in 15 to 20 feet of water and at 15 to 20 yard range. Obviously I cannot use a conventional "dropper" as I am having to cast the freebies out rather than lowering them under the rod tip. Any ideas what I might use/make to get around this problem? A spod still leaves up to 20 foot of water for the bait to fall through before it hits bottom. In a reasonably quick flow this means my freebies could be ending up 2 or 3 swims down!?!?
Any suggestions chaps? |

Re: BAIT DROPPERS | ||

Big bait dropper. I comfortably cast mine 35/40 yards using a spod type rod.
Alternatively make a 'mega' feeder using some old pipe and a clip to attach whatever sized lead is required. Plug with groundbait and fill with whatever is fed. Both will need a hefty rod to be cast as either can weigh as much as 8 - 12oz when filled. I use an old spod rod. |
