Posts: 1155 (25/03/07 19:29) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Iv'e just had a visit from a friend who claims there are Barbel being caught in the river Roding,Essex. The week before the end of the season he was shown a picture,with the time and date on it showing a 6lb fish with the angler. Apparently there are a couple of areas where you can watch them feeding but have not got the exact locations yet. Can any one else shed any light on this without giving to much info away. ATB Bob.

Posts: 1678 (26/03/07 14:29) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Dear Bob, I think there are barbel in most of the Essex rivers, though unfortunately they are incredibly thin on the ground with literally miles of river with no barbel (and in some cases, no fish full stop!). I may be right in thinking that Calverton have/had been producing barbel for the EA to stock them into the Roding. As and when I get time, I'll give Alan or Nick a buzz to see what the score is. Trouble is it gets too easy after a while, hence the frequent trips to the Severn to face a more worthy challenge We need to talk mate. ATB Mike

Based on my understanding of barbel susceptibility to pollution, its difficult to envisage barbel around the 6lb mark anywhere in that region. Unless the EA have taken to deviate from their normal couple of inch long fish stockings?? Be interested in your findings too Joe. ATB Mike

Most introductions of barbel are undertaken illegally, so if there are suddenly 6lb barbel showing up in the river, I'd look no further for the explanation. In the unlikely event the EA. have been involved in stocking the Rodin with barbel, this puts a huge question mark over their refusal to allow further introductions of barbel into the Wensum which, after all, is in the same region. The club also state that these fish were of EA origin, stocked at a length of just a few inches. Considering the possibility of a 6lber objectively, and taking the report of said 6lber at face value, perhaps the correct explanation is that the estimated 98% kill-off was a bit off the mark. I know that doesn't quite suit the pessimistic conspiracy theorists among us but maybe, just maybe, that is in fact the most probable explanation ... Confirmation from EA of barbel stocking in the Roding prior to 2003 would further substantiate this explanation - back over to you Joe Either way, the idea of legit (or otherwise - forgive me, I'm at least being honest) barbel within a cycle ride of my home has kinda got me excited

In order to prosper further I'd venture that those fish need to be pretty much well left alone for the time being. My efforts, if any, would be trying to locate other isolated pockets (if they exist) and I certainly wouldn't fish for them either (well at least not for the next 3 months away). So moving on, the obligatory question has to be, where does the the middle Roding start and finish? ATB Mike

If I get half a chance, I'll try and get some more info about these elusive Roding barbel tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that they did say that they (the EA) had stocked the river in the past (obviously prior to the TRV incident), so maybe there are one or two survivors hanging on..? CT - good to hear all's well mate. As for Calverton, I was having the time of my life - quite literally, doing a job I enjoy, then off to the Trent for the evenings.... Bliss! Regards, Joe.

Posts: 1678 (30/03/07 21:07) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Dear Mike, I'm not entirely sure when they'll be able to supply barbel again - I know a meeting went on to decide the fate of this, but I wasn't around to catch the end result. You've got to remember that they only obtained a TRV "free" broodstock last year, so the barbel that they have are only (at a guess) 0+ fish (soon to be 1+) so even if they were able to stock, I would have thought that the likelihood would be that they wouldn't - not until they reach a sensible size. As I have said, I'll try and get the info from the horses mouth, so to speak, but I've been flat out with other stuff (work, assignments, repairing my car, etc, etc!), so I'll let you know when I know Regards, Joe.

My compulsive obsessive nature has led me to walk various stretches (4 evenings) of the Roding this week. There is little doubt in my mind (albeit unlearned on these matters) that there is good scope to support successful spawning and subsequent "rearing" of young barbel on a number of stretches on this river - I'm largely basing that on reading from various resources on the Wensum projects. What is a little alarming though is the fact that it appears that certain stretches appear completely devoid of fish whilst others are literally alive with them. Haven't pondered why that might be yet - be interested to hear others theories. Thanks again Joe, looking forward to further advice in due course. ATB Mike
