It was fascinating as I havent been in one for years and tank technology, gadgets, decorations and backgrounds have come on so much I nearly put my hand in my pocket and bought one. However, I then thought what would I put in the tank so I went off for a nose.
There were some lovely tropicals and salt water fish, but I decided I would have a nosey in the cold section. Too be honest Tench and Carp just dont do it for me as tank fish and the Sturgeon (yes Sturgeon not Sterlets) would ultimately be way too big for a pond let alone a tank.
Then I saw them, a tank full of beautiful Axolotls, so I wandered over and there on the glass is written the words Barbel £5.95. Surely not methinks, however looking into the dim recesses of the tank behind a gang of Axolotls and underneath a baby grass carp was what I thought must be a gudgeon. I just couldnt quite make it out in the gloom and then one of the Axolotls nudged it and it swam forward to the front where I could clearly count four barbels!
It was the real McCoy at about three inches or so. Then walking past one of the larger ponds I saw out of the corner of my eye what I thought maybe a large Roach or Rudd, looking closer I then saw at the bottom of the pond about half a dozen Barbel weighing in at about a pound to a pound and a half.
My gast was flabbered and fortunately my senses returned and I walked out without buying anything!
The shop in question is the World of Water at Hunton Bridge in Hertfordshire.
