Who would have predicted that- the biggest barbel caught in the UK, excluding the Ouse fish.

Re: WHERE FROM? | ||

Hi all,
Would love to know From a previous thread I believe it is a different fish ? Some of the Kennet regulars may put me straight ? Hopefully it is a different fish as it gives us all hope that somewhere there is another monster lurking, growing fat on Crayfish ! Anyhow, whatever it is a stunning capture and a gorgeous fish to boot ! Cheers Paul M........... |

Re: WHERE FROM? | ||

I think if it was crayfish it was feeding on, it would have done the record 20 years ago. More like it is like the others and been fattened up with boilies and pellets.

A big well done to Mr. Duncan.
Maybe we can return the Barbel record to Berkshire where it belongs, the Ouse has dominated far too long. Ian. |

Different fish | ||

Swung into a local newsagents just now for my weekly devil-spawn free-read. The nineteen-pounder, to my eye and memory at least, looks a different fish from the slightly beefy and well-worn seventeen of a few months ago...

Been a fair while since Duncan graced these boards, but he used to be a regular back in the good old days, on the fish ins too.
A fine chap and a fine barbel. Well done Duncan. |

Hearty congratulations to the captor. This is a truly outstanding angling achievement. I can guess what Duncan means when he says that the stretch is a "lightly fished section". Anywhere that is lightly fished on the Kennet is either very private (actually there aren't too many like that) or is one of the "featureless" canalised stretches where fish location is very hard. Anyone taking on one of the latter (which I presume this to be) is taking on a real challenge. It takes a fair bit of work to figure out where the fish might be and even then you can expect a lot of blanks. (That's why they are "lightly fished"!!). So, to crack one of these difficult stretches in such spectacular fashion is unquestionably terrific fishing. Steve |

Thats an absolute cracker of a Barbel by a guy that quite obviously has done his homework caught on sensible balanced gear ie 12ibs line and 1.5TC rod........who said you need Pokersticks to land em!!

Great fish.A wonderful picture.No info for the fish chasers out their.
Well done to the chap. As for rods......................Mr.KCI,would that be the poster above you.Advocateing a while back 2lb TC rods,for big "Doubles". Duncan should hang his head in shame.Being so undergunned. |

Re: Kennet Monster | ||

I'm gutted.
For years I happily used rods of 1.5lb T/c.Then read the great and the good,advocate 2lbT/c rods for Barbel.So I bought a matching set. Now I must bin these.And revert back to 1.5lb.Cane of course |

Re: Kennet Monster | ||

That's the problem with you tackle tarts.....jumping on the bandwagon!
Mind you bet Duncan flucked it......he mistokes it for seven pound stockie more suited to his undergunned lightweight chub gear! |

Always see my bites mate.Yours especially,Youre easy mate,you won me a "Jacks" on how quick you bit. I like to use a quiver.But being a tart use a Mark Tunley,built quiver.Built on a Chimera Blank,that can throw a loaded feeder of 4 ounces over the The Thames.It shows every little nip ect. Nice rod,yours built for about 200 ish now. As for Cane,lovely rods Stargazer.But no good on the Kennet.Lord know's the Floopy Hatter's did not land fish to 13. Plus Mr.Barders rods did not land Barbel to 15lb. Each to their own eh? |

Cracking Fish and great job on locating a section of the Kennet that has not been hammered. Really hope no one works it out or his piece of paradise he obviously worked hard at discovering will get trashed...
Great picture and really pleased that the Kennet, despite all the doom mongers, is no in with a shot of the record...also really pleased to see weed back, silver fish back and more big perch than you can shake a stick at! Kev |

Tony2C It is the same Duncan who famously drove something mad like14 hours to a Wye fishin?! If so then really pleased to here it, if I remember correctly his job was moving from Scotland to the general area of the Kennet... Very nice bloke and very knowledgeable angler too, if anybody is in touch please pass on my regards and congratulations.
