I've got a few days off next week and will be mostly blanking on the Ouse as usual.. I've been toying with having a `day-out' somewhere else - so, what I'm looking for are recommendations for some day-ticket Barbel fishing. I'm not bothered about the size of fish - I just want a prolific stretch of river (the more prolific the better!) within a couple of hours drive of North Herts, which I guess means the Teme, Severn, Avon(s)..?
Basically I'm looking for the direct opposite of my normal sessions (biteless hours above Bedford!).. Cheers, Declan |

I'd go to one of the tackle shops in Bridgnorth or Bewdley, ask which stretch is fishing best and buy a BAA day ticket for that stretch - maybe check weather/water conditions before you leave though as the Severn can be very moody, especially if you are not a local wise to its ways!

Declan, try the Ouse during daylight
Either that or like several have suggested head to the Severn near Bridgnorth and ask a regular for advice. Scuba Steve is your man, he's knowledgable, helpful, friendly, witty and very good looking |

Have never fished it myself yet but many reports on excellent fishing on the trent at collingham weir sounds very attractive, not too far from you. Some guy and his son caught over 200 barbel in a weekend to 12lbish not long back.....

Sorry Stuart Howse (Ousemeister),
I thought you were banned? How's the fishing? I'd forgotten all about that picture Two can play at this game, I just wish you had kept it to the other site. Steve |

Thanks for the advice all - sounds like the Severn is the place to go then..!
Maybe i'll try the Ouse during daylight hours the rest of the week as suggested by "Howsie - Prince of Darkness" What kind of conditions should I expect on the Severn? - I don't even own a lead bigger than 2.5oz! Cheers, Declan |

Have a look here (in daylight tomorrow
Its a few foot up at the moment, which is good You might need a few bigger leads, maybe 3-4 oz, depending on the swims you fish. Like I said in my PM, give me a shout back and we can talk more, if you want. Steve |

I'd like to say a big THANKYOU to Steve Williams for taking me under his wing on the Severn yesterday..
In terms of successful guiding I don't think Trefor West has anything to worry about just yet (only kidding Steve!), but I had a great day, topped off with a monster Severn Barbel.. From what Steve tells me it was probably a river record. In fact i'd go so far as to say that Graham King should hide his head in shame catching those tiddlers up at Adams.. Sorry about that last bit - I think that the midlands air has affected my powers of judgement - i've just lost the plot! Anyway, thanks again Steve - anytime you fancy a blank on the Ouse just let me know! (by the way, when I fished it today it had burst it's banks - made the Severn look like a ditch!) Declan |
