Certainly worth having a look in the FAQ
Personally I'll be fishing paste from now on, not necessarily sweet though, probably still fishy and wrapped round a boilie. Must try meatballs properly this season as well.... cheers, Andy F |

Evening all,
been thinking about meatballs recently, as a change bait.... ....how would you go about rigging them, they seem mighty fragile to me Spoke to a chap on the Teme some weeks ago, and he mentioned threading some up the hooklink with one over the hook. Cast out, ignore the rod knocks as the baits on the hooklength are sampled and hold on tight when the hook bait gets taken Paul |

I am also going to make up a block of bait that I can cut pieces off, the size that I want.
Mixture will be 50/50 Source basemix and halibut pellet powder, with Bankside "oyster crunch" liquid. Plan is to make up the mix with the requisite amount of eggs, shape into a block and boil for a couple of minutes.... ....hopefully I will end up with a block of bait, soft in the middle with a skin on the outside that can be cut into cubes, akin to luncheon meat but a bit different Paul |

that sounds like a fantastic bait i have something similar which is made from ground baits from the sensas 3000 range the carp mix is excellent mix it like aboilie mix with some maize meal and winter trout pellet paste and eggs it works well in large cubes and it takes all that can fit it in their mouth,s. good luck to you all

Sainsbury's do swedish pork and beef meatballs that seem pretty tough out of the packet. I kept a few back after feeding the kids tonight and plan to try them on the Loddon tomorrow. Anyone used them?

Re: Winter barbel baits

When i use meat balls i just push a size 2 hook straight through and turn a little then push back in.
Had no problems at all doing it like that and caught a few fish as well. cheers,Andy |

I have tied some hairs to a 4 hook, especially for the meatballs, Has anyone haired a meatball? If so I would appeciate any feed back as to how succesfull (or not) it was.
Thanks |

i used to make the blocks of bait you refer to for carping. very good bait indeed, especially on pressured waters that had been hammered on round boiled baits. a few tips: i always used to wrap the block in loads of clingfilm and then wrap with a good few layers of brown packing tape. this seals the block and will reduce or even eliminate the leak off of the flavours and attractors in your bait during the boiling process. experiment with boiling times, you will find that different mixes will require different boiling times to get the desired effect. you will probably need about 20 mins. i used to like my blocks so that the outside had a nice skin-perfect for hair rigging then the further towards the centre you go, the softer the block. it does take some experimenting but you can get it just right and have some paste like mix left in the middle. cut while still warm, it makes the job easier, and cut into all different shapes and sizes thanks, glad you posted that, i had all but forgotten about this, im gonna give it a try for old whiskers. |

Re: Winter barbel baits

yes you did read that right.....20 mins.
once you drop the block in, the temperature drops considerably, it will take 2 or 3 mins for the water to come back to to the boil. the blocks i used to make were usually a 4 egg mix, around a lb of base mix. they use to turn out around the size of a house brick. it will take a while to warm that all the way through, let alone cook the mix. as i said, the cooking time will take some experimenting with depending on the type of mix and consistency. 20 mins is merely a guide. you could try 10-15 mins, take the block out, cut it in half and see what its like. if you feel it needs longer, just wrap it back up in cling film and tape and drop it back in the pan. |

Gonna have to get some more gas for the stove then
Mrs T hasn't yet relented to letting my bait making experiments back into the kitchen.... ....green lipped mussel, seafood blend and monster crab out the mockers on my useage of her kitchen years ago Come to think of it, just as Andy Stephens was emigrating Paul |
