Posts: 70 (13/12/06 20:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I have done this before so forgive me for going over old ground as its been sitting in the back of my head for a while know I have an alcove in my office and I would like to stand in the corner holding an orange. Or falling that seeing as oranges are expensive at the moment. I would like to set up an aquarium to hold perch roach minnows or bleak and yes you have quest it barbel. The dimension are 790mm by 300mm height I am not sure of and for the imperialist amongst us 31" by 12". My first thought was to have a browse in the freeadds for second hand tropical fish tanks including filters/heaters which I don`t think I would need but I would want to have the best filtration system for my flock. Stocking I would like to be from my local venue which might be against the law I am not sure. If some of you lot have set one up successfully any chance of some pics and the obligatory advice. One more thing I want the tank as natural as possible regarding gravel and plant life. At the moment I am about 80-20 in favour of having a go. I am looking to spent about £100 on setting it up. I kept 2 "Calverton" barbel in a 4 ft tank for two years before I put them in my pond a they'd grown so much.

You see having 3 young kids under 10 young my fishing time is limited about once a week for a 4 hour session so a tank with fish in it from my local in a river enviroment would be a soul food. Simon

I bought a tank, pump/filter, plants, food, light and heater etc for £135, its 2.5ft x 1.5ft. I bought an extra pump cheap and i have 4 small carp in there (very special carp, the are Wellington carp crossed with Sutton strain) i have put in gravel and rocks with a few ornamental things like large marbles and pebbles! They love it and have grown well. Been feeding them on MP paste -great for testing their reactions!!! Eat to clean out when the water looks less clean (or algae starts growing on the side). Just syphon out witha bit of hose until nearly empty, clean the side, cleans the filter pads or replace and fill it back up. Add some ph stabiliser and salt. Takes about 20 - 30 mins (85 litres). I want to get rid of 2 carp as they are getting too big and get something else like tench or some rudd. There is a good flow in there too.

Posts: 779 (14/12/06 14:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi , get the best pump you can afford , and more powerfully rated than the tanks volume .Fresh water species are more " dirty " than tropical, but are more tolorent to cleaning out . As above , you can lower the levels to almost empty , but do this after a good swish round of the gravel , and cleaning the glass , then syphon out the dirty water . A powerfull pump/filter ( external self-contained) see,s the fish swim against a bit of a flow. Also a good bright light will show things of to the best .Shops are normaly geared up to tropical fish set up,s , and don,t always give you the best advice over pumps/filters for cold water fish . Before I moved to my cottage I had an great octaganal tank which was deap , and quite a large diameter, miss it . thank god they picked a luton fan for the ashes, monty , a hatter doing the busness down under Hatter . hatter
