i know its a little late, and maybe your on your hols now,but anyway...yes the river holds barbel...ive fished it a lot for carp (of which there are lots, upto 38lb,for me that is im sure there are bigger),but i have caught the odd barbel,(they are the same fish as ours).8lb being the best fish...ive probably done 3-4 weeks on this river and only had 4 barbel,my advice is dont bother, beef up your tackle and fish for the carp....they fight like demons, and theres lots of em...of course you need the right peg....

The problem (for visitors) with a lot of French rivers is their sheer size.
If you really need to catch then the specific area is as important as the actual river. I have fished a few French rivers but, without local knowlede it is pretty much a waste of time. Cahal |

Fair comment Cahal. Gets me a bit of peace for a while though. I've fished a the Loire 'blind' and enjoyed reasonable success, so I think I'll give it a bash anyhow even if it's only skimmers and chub.
Besides, you never know, I might get talking to a local. Better than watching telly anyway - especially French telly. Regards Mike |

The Southern rivers such as the Lott, Dordogne, and the Cher (a tributary to the Loire), are packed full of Barbel and Chub, and are crossable up to the waste in most places, they're lovely crystal clear gravel bottomed beauties. Take a look at the pictures in the nature shots of the season thread, on the other species board.
Not all French rivers are big Cahal, only the big rivers are big. Ad |
