I should add, a big thanks to all the gents that offered advice on feeder tactics. How do you count the growth rings on a scale?

Seems like the feeder method paid dividends then, lovely fish Badger and gratz on a new PB. Though of course now you are going to want to beat that
. Hurry up and post the picture, looking forward to seeing it.
Wondering what the river is looking like after the past few days of rain. I'm off on holiday but don't go away till Friday so will be having a run out during the week.

Firstly well done Badger.
"How do you count the growth rings on a scale?" Firstly you need to take several scales to get an accurate reading if a scale is dislodged from a fishes body it will regenerate and would give a false reading, the best place to take scales from is behind the Pecs, one for either side then a couple from elsewhere on the body. Then you need to stick them onto a microscope slide and view with either a microscope or a slide projector, not something that can be done easily on the bank. This method is not particularly accurate for older fish because the annuli on older fish are very compact along the edge of the scale so the annuli are not easy to see, the Otoliths are preferred because they can be readily processed and annuli on older fish are more distinct than on scales but this would involve the killing of the fish. The mouth and its condition is no guide to the age of the fish. |

The Badger wrote: Badger well done on the fish lovely specimen, with regard to counting growth rings any decent magnifying glass is well capable of doing the job on the bank.Just makesure you are capable of removing a scale if you are thinking of ageing your fish. One is quite enough as this is not an exact science. |

The whole point of removing a scale to age a fish is to do it accurately otherwise there is little point removing a scale in the first place this cannot be
done with just one scale and a magnifying glass

To be honest I would not remove scales off a fish anyway. I would be concerned in case of causing a infection and would rather be happy knowing I had caught a
decent fish and returned it happy and healthy to the water. Obviously I am not as experienced as most of you others but it does seem a complicated and
inaccurate method.

It gets more complex than that Mr Hope, some are prepared by impregnating the scales with silver nitrate and viewing under polarized light

Well, not been on here for a while, as nothing really to report. Had loads of chub but no barbel, although I did manage to get broken off by one last night 2nd
chuck
Then the otter came swimming through the swim when it got dark
and that put pay to that as it just went totally dead, so packed up and came home.
Was down last Sunday evening with Jeff Neasham, He managed to get three cracking little barbel out biggest about 5lb, smallest about two and a half pound, all in mint condition. He also got broken off by one. Met a few cracking lads last sat night at Cundal that fish the Wear, with the current record holder, just thought I'd give you guys a mention and to all the pricless information on getting my first wear barb out Cheers Stuart and Chris !!!!
