Would you let your guset for the day fish the hot swim or would you have it for yourself?
Intersting topic as it's a situation I have found myself in, and yes I put the guest in the better swim.

Would you have the best swim for yourself? |

You have a guest for a days fishing and there are one or two hot swims on the river where the capture of one or two barbel is almost certain.
Would you let your guset for the day fish the hot swim or would you have it for yourself? Intersting topic as it's a situation I have found myself in, and yes I put the guest in the better swim. would you or wouldn't you (Result) |

Had this predicament yesterday, (not a guest, a mate who had just purchased a club ticket, first visit ) I took the easy way out, explained exactly what I knew
about a couple of different swims, and let him pick.........jammy git caught a 9 1/2 pounder, only his second Barb.

I will always put a guest on the best swim, I can fish the better swim another day and like fishing other swims to see what is about - even if I blank.
Last time I did it, I only had 1 fish and he had 7. |

if its a known hot spot then yes i would definitely put the guest there, however if its not, its just another section of river, i will describe the likely
holding areas of any fish and then let them decide where to fish.

Now, I can only reflect on a thought that struck me a few minutes ago: "Surely it is symptomatic of our "Me, Me, Me" fish-hungry times that this
question is being asked at all.?"
All I can say is that if you want to be invited for days on really lush water, you have to drop the Best Swim Mindset immediately. Once upon a time I often used to be invited to fish some blinding waters - chalkstreams, for trout, grayling and coarse fish, and some fine bits of salmon and sea-trout water out West - by individuals that I had not courted, sucked up to, brown-nosed, ingratiated myself with or chased (I hadn't known that they existed), but people who had somehow found me then invited me to fish. And, do you know what every one of those gentlemen (including a fabulous eighty-odd-year-old who really was a Chairman as well as a TRUE Gentleman) did on the day? They scarcely fished (and, in a good many cases, never fished); they merely showed me their waters and their fish and gave me a great and memorable time. An Angling guest comes first. Period.

as with mr b on this, guests come first, after all i can fish the day after and after that if wanted.
it's more fun to give than receive. |

the whole point of taking a guest ,Is to impress upon them the quality of the fishing you have access too.&/or too teach them something .so why sell
yourself short.
personally i'd much rather see the smile on someones face ,who's just caught a fish from a great swim ,than feel a smile on my own face from catching from the same easy swim .and besides i'd much rather try and crack a unknown swim ,than take easy pickings .Plus i'm cr@p at keeping secrets .

Paul Boote is absolutely right.
and so was Solomon: " For the hope of the ungodly..... passeth away as the remembrance of a guest that tarrieth but a day. " regards Hugo |

I did that on a carp fishing trip - I fished on a featureless side on a lake, and gave him the "best bit" of the large peg. I caught 2 and he
blanked... I did feel bad

Lol, i must be the meanest here....
My mate is new to river fishing, and we have a pact that whoever catches the most/best fish buys the chips on the way home. Despite having to buy the chips each time we go, I simply cannot allow him the best swim!!! (we are great mates, and he does exactly the same to me when given the opportunity) Lee - if you read this, then SORRY, and hope you enjoyed the chips..... Chris |

If I have a guest for the day my first consideration is to get them a fish or three. My reward comes from making their day memorable rather than letting them
sit back and watch me catch the fish!
Its one of the only times when I can take blanking! |

Guest everytime for me (maybe)
Last week I took 4 work colleagues mackerel fishing of the N Norfolk coast, 2 had never fished and 2 never fished from the beach, I caught the least as spent more time setting them up. They caught 58 of them and loved every minute of it!!! For them it was the beginning of fishing! If it was the same for the Barbel and a stretch of river, no way they would be noisy, excitable and lessen my chance of one!! leave em at work!!! |

I have just come back from my first trip to a new club water. My pal has fished it a few times and was into two fish on the first two chucks(jammy sod!).He
invited me to his swim and i had two as well,he even let me have a go with his ipower. This is one of the many reasons why i love fishing.

How uncharitable those miserly curs must be.
Yesterday a friend took me fishing to a river I had never fished before. He put me into the best swims and showed me where to cast. One of the best days fishing I have ever had. I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did. Regards to you know who you are! Hugo |

I've been doing it for years, I fish more often than a mate so I do the groundwork, he catches, he just think he's lucky. He does not know HOW lucky!
