Posts: 43 (18/07/08 00:23) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	had a session on ouse tonight conditions looked reasonable but it was not to be, had hook pull on one which is a bugger when its the only decent bite you get all night, loads of knocks but couldn't hit any. took a friend who had never caught a barbel and he managed one of exactly 5lb thoroughly deserved after blanking on his two previous sessions perseverance pays!!!

FIrst cast caught a massive branch. Second cast caught a massive boat!!! lol... them things go much too fast. But after i eventually got fishing i managed a bream of 4lb 8 oz and a barbel of 3lb 6 ozs. Surely the smallest barbel in the ouse!!! lol. Strangely enough the barbel gave a strong drop-back and swam towards me rapidly. i didnt think i had it on at first. Meat baits a waste of time due to the eels. Got both fish on pellet and fished pellet in pVA bags. Good luck to anyone going today....Jon

Yesterday, I managed the eels and bream Mike mentioned but alas no barbel. My catch included a one eye'd, damaged flanked bream I had a couple of hundred yards upstream a week or so ago. This seems a bit of a fluke given there must be a fair few bream in there! Oh, and don't forget the perch that hacked away at anything resembling a lobworm on my hook! I may be fortunate to get out on the river tomorrow. Barbel beware, I'm due a good session! Famous last words!! Best of luck Steve

The only way I know to stop catching eels is to take up Golf! Anybody any good Ideas of how to aviod them. To think we use to target eels in matches,I remember a Guy on the Wharfe cacthing 20lb of them one day. I am glad I became converted. Ken.

Last couple of sessions on mother Ouse have seen me bank a couple of big eels , proper jobs ,I would guess pushing 3 lb in last evenings case . They are devils to deal with and fight in and out of the water with some gusto , the swimming backwards being a particularly useful weapon in their armoury of escape tactics . All good fun . If you want to know how not to catch tommys as opposed to eelsI will give you a masterclass sometime , last seasons tally 1 ....

In spite of the low and clear conditions we both were lucky enough to catch fish , the best looking being this ouse p.b to paul at 7lb 7 oz. I managed to catch 7 fish and lost 3, 2 of which were to bent over hookpoints - must check next time. My best was also an ouse p.b at exactly 9lb. Mother ouse has been kind to me in the 2 sessions so far this year (14 fish) . I hope the swale is as kind tomorrow. geoff

Why it seems to have gone out of fashion these days is a mystery to me. Its one of the best barbel baits in my opinion. And best of all.....no bloody eels!!!

Re corn , yes it is a good barbel bait , but if there are chub about I will guarantee you they will be on it before the barbel get a look in . Although not a top eel attractor , worms and meat being the best closely followed by maggots , eels , Im afraid to say are not averse to a snaffle on the yellow peril . I caught 3 in one evening on corn , I had swopped from worms to try and avoid them . I don't think there is much they won't eat , hempseed maybe ?
