Anyone else been out after bass, so far this summer, with any degree of success?

Had a few schoolies from the north kent coast a few weeks ago. Should get out more but that other species is occupying my time at the moment. How about you?

Went fly-fishing for them last Sunday. Got distracted by mullet though.
I'll try again next weekend. |

Been out once and got rewarded with an eel of about 1.5lbs. Going next week, bait fishing on a surf beach again. The saltwater fly gear and the plugging outfit
remain dry for the time being.

Paul,
Caught my first one of the year yesterday. Was "crewing" for a mate who runs a charter boat out of Burnham on Crouch and had a brief dabble which saw immediate success The party were fishing with lug but it was so rough
(it blew a steady 41.5 knots for a while ) that it was difficult to
register bites and so they were getting robbed by small fish and not hooking up much. I stuck two of the biggest hermits we had on a 4/0 and fished across the
tide. Rod went round a couple times, I picked it up and the next time it plucked I hit it, just over 4lbs
Fortunately one of the party (paying customers) is my best mate so I "donated" the bass to him
It was a friend at works 50th birthday party today and seemed like a fitting present for such a nice chap - so it's in his freezer now. Day off tomorrow - will be targetting them from the shore with an ederly gentleman who's mad about bass. Caught my biggest bass last year from tomorrows location. ATB Mike |

Hi barbuscluelus I use a daiwa wilderness 9/11ft. Its nice and stiff (ooer!) and can work a surface lure from a reasonable distance. From what I've heard Tenryu rods are the mutts nuts and designed specifically for lure bass fishing. Century and Zziplex make some nice bait rods as well as the Anyfish Anywhere series. Have a look on the World Sea Fishing Forum, it's a great resource. Ben |

Most bass rods (11ft or 11ft 6in and 2-3oz) are great in theory but they fold when the wind is strong and a good surf is running. Normal beachcasters cope with
the conditions better but overgun the job. I've just bought a Penn Surfblaster Seatrek Twintip. This is 12ft with a lighter (2 to 4oz), and a heavier (4 to
6oz) tip. RRP a silly £225 but you can now pick them up for £80 from Veals, etc. Very slim blank and the lighter tip looks just the job.
Trying mine out tomorrow! For plugging I have a Shimano Exage 10/11ft travel spin rod that is the absolute dogs!

I use a 2.25 carp rod and a 6000 baitrunner for my bait or plug work in the surf, I only get down the coast occasionally as it is 70 miles to the sea from
Telford so it is difficult to justify a large outlay, having said that I've not had any problems other than two weeks ago when I caught a schoolie in a
gale before before being blown up the beach and straight into the pub

Away for a couple of weeks from next week, and will be after Bass/Pollock etc, but not with a rod, I'll be spearfishing.
Had plenty last year, so hoping for some of the same this year. Never seen so many Bass as I did last year, and some very good fish too. Great to watch a shoal of 50+ fish working the sand and rocks after crabs and eels. I only take what I need for that evenings BBQ. Steve |

Hi Paul,
You're not fishing off Crosby beach are you mate......? Could talk for hours about bass fishing. As a very young boy in the 70's I would fish for them in the Solent. Their average size was much bigger then
before the ficken commercials started to really target them....Appears to be good numbers of the smaller fish but a general absence of the middle size fish, (I
don't have any data to support that statement), from what I read.
"A mound of earth on Walton Breck Road was created for the growing numbers of fans to watch the team. It was called the 'Spion Kop' after a
battle in the Boer War six years earlier. It was not the only Kop - low hill in Afrikaans - nor the first. But it would become the greatest......."

Do, please, try to munch as few bass as possible. Put 'em back. After all, we return everything else we catch, including the nice-eating perch
("Keep one for Patsy to cook, Peter..." - B.V. in another era).

Been fishing at Formby Ian. Too many bloody Anthony Gormley iron lookalikes to snag up on at Crosby! Been pumping my own lug for bait (with very mixed
results!)
I've had bass to 4.5 lb on the fly in N. Wales but still waiting for a bait caught one. Plugging is the next big thing this summer!
Love the signature, mate. Up The Mighty Reds!
