for tying braid to mono try this

i did it for a carp forum so forgive the carp theme LOL

The Combi-link.

There are many ways to skin a cat, as there are many ways to tie a combi rig also.

This is the way i do it and the easiest and strongest way in my opinion.

It is a very versatile rig suitable for pop-ups and bottom baits as well as particles. it encompasses some of the advantages of a stiff rig in that you get a stiff boom that is resistant to tangling and kicks the bait away from the lead, it also gives the free moving hook benefits given by a braided link

Its anti tangle properties and hinged presentation lend its use superbly well to pop-up users and the knot that joins the materials is a great anchor point for tungsten rig putty. The putty is an interesting factor in the mechanics of this rig as it pulls down on the hook and helps to manouver the hook into position when a fish picks the bait up, for this reason i use a large blob and i use it whether im using pop-ups, bottoms or particles.

for the braided section i have used Drennan/ESP Sinklink but any supple braid will give the same result. Breaking strain is a personal and applicational issue but i dont go lower than 15lb (6.81kg) as braids are pretty unchanging in diameters and more importantly stiffness as the breaking strains rise.

For the stiff section it really depends how stiff you want it, if you want mega stiffness one of the many stiff materials on the market will do just fine, however i like the potential invisibility of flourocarbon so personally i like high breaking strain flourocarbons which give stiffness and apparent invisibility. If stiffness is not your thing or absent from your armoury then panic not, any high B/S mono or flourocarbon will suffice.

First tie the hooking arrangement leaving a tail of 3-4 inches (75-100 millimeters) for ease of tying, here i have tied a "blowback" or "claw" rig but its open to experimentation and i am by no means saying this is the most effective way to do it



Then you need to fold over the stiff material by about 2 inches (50 millimeters) again for ease but with practice this can be reduced slightly



Then pass the tail through the open loop formed until the hooks eye is approx 1/4 inch (6mm) from the loop and pinch.




Then whip away 8 times neatly.



Pinch the whipping and turn, then whip 6 times back up on top of the first set of whippings.



Pass the tail back through the loop.



Ease it all down tight keeping the coils nice and neat



Trim and blob the tags for confidence.





Add a large blob of putty to the knot.



If you use a quicklink to change your rigs as i do then finish the link with a figure of eight loop knot at your desired length.



The same rig can also be reversed to incorporate a braided link with a stiff section at the hook end that gives the same effect as a large piece of shrink tubing but with less bulk, and with the addition of a large blob of putty gives a rig that hangs onto the bottom lip of a carp and with the the suppleness of braid in the main part of the link it is very hard for a carp to deal with.
