Well done, nice to know the average size of the barbel has increased so much since last year and the start of the season.
I cannot wait until later in the year - all those new doubles, I am really looking forward to catching them.
Regards,
Dave

ones, or the other species which inhabit the river too

What other species, Dan? As we all know, there aren't many coarse fish above PM weir - only those with an adipose appendage
Anyone been on the river this week? Just wondering if the level's dropped much after a couple of relatively dry days? |

An eel? If that is not another joke post, then that is a quite significant catch, and the only one I have been able to find record of from the Goyt.
I couple of weeks ago I was watching a fish trying, very lethargically, to swim up a weir. Initially I thought it must have been a sea trout although the colour seemed wrong, so my thanks to those others who confirmed that brown trout also ascend weirs. I didn't know that, and that must have been the fish I saw. A good sized trout too, my guess would be about 4 pounds. Nao |

River level is down atleast from this time last week anyway, still a bit of colour in though.. Drew a blank on the barbel front today those rainbow trout kept
me occupied though great sport, iam realy surprised how many iam catching they do like the old luncheon meat. There was another guy in the water with waders
and what not free lining he seemed to be catching allot of silver fish and i fish way above pear mill.

Gents
This is a e mail i recived today about the goyt
Dear Mr Oldham
Your request for information about fish on the Goyt has been passed on to me from the National
Customer Contact Centre.
In reply to your questions:
Salmon and Sea Trout
We had 35 salmon pass up the Woolston Weir fish pass in Warrington. We also carried out some
juvenile surveys in the lower reaches of the Goyt and found young fish that had hatched in 2007 and 2006 at several locations.
In addition we undertook walkover surveys of the river this winter to look for new redds. Redds
are 'spawning nests' and can be seen as patches of visible, fresh spawning activity. They give us an indication of what to expect from next years
juvenile surveys, and again we found good evidence of salmon spawning in the lower reaches of the river.
Chub and barbel
Both species spawn in the Goyt, along with salmon, grayling a brown trout. We currently have no
definite plans to stock into the river whilst population levels are gradually improving. We do monitor fish numbers in the river but assessing fishery
performance is proving difficult as the summer rains of recent years have made it hard to get reliable data.
If you want to speak further about the river, you can give Paul Bennet a ring (07768905966). He
is our Fisheries Officer for the river and knows it as well as anyone.

Thanks Oilman for the report - very precise about the Salmon. I agree with your thoughts on the Fed, though I've heard that the Fed bailiff (sorry for not
remembering his name) is a one man band at the moment (though I'm sure that's not news to some). On that basis, I guess he's the man to approach.
whattablanka - Yes, real diversity especially also having caught the bream on opening day Cheers, Rich

Re. my comment about Coarse fish (other than Grayling-if you you see them that way) being rare above Pear Mill. I should have said RELATIVELY rare. Below the
weir small Chub etc are very common. I had a dozen or more in an hour right under the A560 road bridge last year. Above the weir there are certainly less of
them, and even fewer of them above the next weir at Otterspool.
That's my experince anyway. |

Incidentally, I think the capture of an Eel from the Goyt is very significant. In over 30 years of fishing around Greater Manchester, I've only ever heard
of 1 eel caught, a bit specimen from Sale Water Park some fifteen years ago. Now that they are in the river, hopefully we can look forward to some specimens in
the surrounding stillwaters in years to come.

Goyt Flyman - I'm astonished by the rarity of eels around mcr. I almost feel like a celebrity
Fished a short session this evening. Blanked - not a sniff. River well up and chocolate coloured. Quite a bit of debris (for want of a better word) coming through. Out at the weekend too. I hear the Romiley Fair is taking place on Sunday. Anyone going? jdog - not fished the Etherow yet. I caught a bream in the one of the weirs lower down. Nice surprise really. Cheers, Rich
