That's a bit scary, Shippo, just before the season starts. Mine is still ok (had a few outings over the close season) but also acquired a Daiwa 4050 BRT as
backup.

Sorry to worry you but on asking around a few friends past the nsame message to me.
Some Stratos do lock up after 6 to 12 months fishing. It is not just the cheaper E models either, the full blown ones do it as well. Get a set of Epix Pro 40's before they go!

I bought two Fox 7000's in the close season to go with some new rods I bought but after only one session with them I am thinking of changing back to my
Shimano 5000's or bringing my Cardinal 54's out of retirement.
I found it difficult to cast a 4oz weight and the clutch was a bit jerky something I am not used to and fortunately perhaps I only caught a Chub no Barbel, however, this thread does not give me confidence to persevere when it could cost me a fish of a lifetime. Alan |

Alan - I've caught a few barbel with mine and haven't experienced any problems casting 4oz. Can you elaborate on what you mean by 'difficult'
when casting? I've found casting to be one of the positive aspects of the reel.

Why are people throwing these in the bin - don't the reels come with a 2 year warranty were they would be replaced/repaired FOC? I know most tackle shops
would send them back and if Fox replaced them FOC then you could either have the replacement or something of a similar value?

I certainly find them smooth casting, I have cast fully loaded 4oz feeders across the Wye and Severn with no problem at all. Like I've said before I have
had no problems with mine and I also find the clutch to be smooth, certainly better than my Shimanos ! I have the dearer version so I can't vouch for the
7000e's but certainly if mine packed up within a season I'd be back down the tackle shop like a shot !
Sorry can't fault them ! Cheers Paul M. |

Well i have a pair of 7000's (not the 7000e) brought from **bay for £90 including P&P they had only been used a few times not a scratch on them and i
am finding them great to use, and as you say Paul M clutch is very smooth, Great line lay can't fault mine either, hopefully they will last for years

I went to Alan's in Worcester today very well known shop, est 28 years, they told me that they sold all of there Fox stratos reels half price because they
had nothing but trouble with them. This i can believe after owning two FS10000 and both have seized up on me after only a few uses. Shimano rule the roost in
reels, tried and tested for years.

Ive got 6 Stratos 10000 that I use for carping with my lad, had them all 12 months and they are spot on. The linelay is superb, the clutch is miles better than
my old jerky shimanos, their is no way I would go back to shimano after having two 10000xtes fall apart on me.

I think the overall feedback would tell us that Fox fall to bits more than Shimano do.

Pritch - yes, you're probably right. I like my 'cheap' 7000E, but I completey understand the contrary views. After all, the term 'brand
loyalty' was invented for discussions just like this one.

Rich,
I agree about our cheapo 7000E's...they are growing on me. |

TRIGGA |

To all those who've said that the fox clutch is smoother than shimano's - RUBBISH! To all those who still own a Stratos - did your dealer tell you that
all the Stratos' have had problems - culminating in Fox re-calling the reels earlier this year - probably not! If you want a budget 'baitrunner'
reel get an Okuma - or better still save up and get a Shimano - still the best.

Trigga - 'all' the Stratos'? Just to reiterate, I've had no problems with mine. Kind of contradicts your post (and your upper-case rubbish)?
Like most things, many of the posts on here are borne of personal experience and opinion, so if one angler finds the Fox clutch smoother than a Shimano then
that's his/her experience. Are you actually rubbishing the experience or just saying you don't agree? If the latter, there are better ways of doing it.
If the former, you're wrong.

Well ive got both stratos and shimanos and their is no comparison between the clutches the stratos is far better than the rear drag shimanos reels. As for fox
recalling the reels they did recall one batch of the more expensive 10000 reels but none of the others. I have six 10000e and all have been excellent unlike my
shimmy 10000xtes two of which the gearing fell apart and had to be replaced. I will never buy another shimano reel after that and so far the foxes are proving
more reliable for me. When I read threads like this one I do wonder how many people have actually owned the fox reels or are they posting on hearsay.

Well I posted about mine seizing up, would not think of fabricating a post just thought I would give my own informed opinion, my post was clear and to the
point. I recently bought Okuma Epix Pro's to replace the Fox 7000e that seized and at the moment im very happy with them. I suppose its horses for
coarses....Shippo

I have a pair of FS7000's and no real problems to report with them. Admittedly I don't use them all the time, as I don't find the need for a
baitrunner type reel when fishing with one rod (Normal fishing I use one of several quality Daiwa front drag reels and believe nothing touches them).
Also just a general comment around Shimano rear drag clutches. Despite Shimano baitrunners being bullet proof, I always found that playing fish hard and on a tight clutch (as I like to), was just not possible with Shimano GTE's and GTEB's, as the clutch was far to snatchy and would even lockup under such a tight setting. |
