Great to see the river up and pushing through....reckon could have been in with a shout of one or two more but I took your advice and left for another river mid afternoon and managed a couple from there as well. Hope you managed a few on your stretch! All in all a great weekend up in Yorkshire! Hopefully be back in a couple of weeks! Huw

Posts: 11 (14/07/08 19:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Been again to the Ouse today, 4th time and still not got a barbel, am catching on other rivers but struggling with the 'Big Misters River' Got to the river to find probably about 3' extra in and still coloured and so was hopeful. 6 hours fishing produced 1 pike, probably about 10lb which bit me off at the net and a TOMMY, first one I have seen for a few years ! The pike was on meat, strange but true. River dropped about 6" during the 6 hours I was there. I am concentrating efforts on the Leeds water, I know they are there, my mate has had a few, I even fished a peg today he has had a couple out of. Not giving in, its not going to beat me but any ideas will be gratefully received !!!

Just two bream at about 5lb to show for 8 hours work. They did fight like stink though which was a little strange! Both on pellet! The banks are very very slippery in places - please take care if you're out as these are possiblly the most difficult conditions for keeping your footing. There has also been some bank crumbling so think carefully before standing on the edge! Stick with it Stoggy - it'll come around! Steve

Alas no! I've been using some mountain boots which have been OK but I think any footwear might struggle a bit at the moment!

A fine catch.Keep its location secret or the tommie boys will flood the venue (often disguised as Guitar playing Barbel anglers) Dont despair mate, Yorkshire rivers are all challenging and some of the guys on these pages put alot of time in to catch a few fish. The secret is to keep a bait in the water as long as possible ,in the right place at the right time. Last week I had a bonanza ,but believe me we all go through lean periods keep at it! Try partical baits as the colour runs out Ken.

I usually fish meat but also give pellets a go or will have a go with lobworms if seriously coloured. Usually fish pellet on a hair with a small bit of PVA tube with pellets or crushed pellet and hemp in, this has caught me fish on other rivers (Nidd and Wharfe). As for the Tommy, the location will remain a secret, such fine sport cannot be publicised for fear of lurkers !!!!!!!

The ouse , now it has dropped right back is in dour form , this is often the case after a flood and the accompanying feeding frenzy . Try a big lobworm this can sometimes tempt a barbel when all else fails . Tommys like em too !

I've had the same problem on the Ouse Monday and Swale yesterday, only finding bream and chub for my efforts. I must admin, the latter was somewhat easier than fishing my usual haunts on the Ouse .... they seem to have steps cut out and places that actually look like proper swims in that part of the world, not at all like the Nidd or Ouse! I'm off to mow the lawn and hack back my overpowering garden this afternoon! Do you tend to find the fish feed normally again after a few days? Cheers Steve

Posts: 852 (16/07/08 21:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	High water and consistent or rising temps are in my experience the only real ' guaranteed ' conditions when Ouse Barbel are on the grub , recent form illustrates this . In prolonged periods of low water , summer or at other times, the barbel feed but tend to become more localised , finding the hot spots is absolutely critical . When conditions are more condusive they seem to spread out a bit and relatively large numbers of the smaller barbel seem to materialise as if from nowhere , in this form landing on fish is a lot easier , this said they still seem to be found in pockets . All this is part of the rivers charm , it is, and always will be a relatively hard river , but given persistence it can produce some outstanding fish , witness Kens recent success . On that evening I was fishing no more than two thirds of half a mile away from Ken and despite toughing it out I blanked spectacularly even though I had taken fish from the area relatively recently , the further disadvantage I had on the night was that the river was rising quickly and my swim choice was severely restricted so roving about was not really an option . There has been a number of occasions this year ,when people have had good catches just after talking to one of the chosen ones. I believe you and Mr Bowes have been abducted by Aliens during one of your evening sessions,or possibly after the pub at the last fish in. Can you remember the events of that night? Talking of which is the organizer still over the water?How are the arrangements Robin? Ken Ps can you ring me up the next time I go to the Derwent,so we can see if the Dark magic works there
