When selecting a swim do you sometimes pick one purely on watercraft, choosing a good swim, with obvious feature or do you sometimes just get the
"Feeling" that a swim will fish well even if you've seen better swims elsewhere?

15 views but no reply??
Well Igive an example I fished a stillwater last week that I had been catching good carp from (ok so it's not barbel but bare with me) and I decided not to fish either of the 2 swims I had caught well from previously but fish the other end of the lake. I had around 30 roach in about an hour, then a couple of carp from the margin - all on sweetcorn. I picked the swim because it "felt" right - no other reason Anyone else ever got the gut instinct that a swim will produce the results when their head is telling them to fish somewhere else?

Well I'm a little disapointed with you lot - viewed 37 times by now and not one of you can bother to reply - even to say - "No Paul I always pick a
swim on watercraft"
I put this in Barbel Talk so others would not think it a wind up or anything - guess I'm on my own with this thread Dons guitar and dark glasses " Only the lonely know the way I feel tonigth"

Hi matey
When selecting a swim i normally use watercraft . Swim selection all depends on the river conditions, and the weather conditions . I find it more satisfying to catch barbel out of swims that Ive never fished before. The stretch that we fish i walk past a few swims which i know hold big fish, but find it more of a challenge to find new swims rather than fish the same pegs time after time. cheers John |

Hi John
But do you ever get that 6th sense - I'll fish this swim it just feels right? I don't often but on the few times I have I've mostly done well - |

I'm a fishchaser so my swim selection is based soley on the basis of whether it's done a big fish recently

Fair enough Barbus -
I just got to thinking (not somehing I do often) that when I do get the feeling that a certain swim should be fished I shouldn't ignore it even if it doesn't look right or isn't a well known swim |

John - totally agree with you on the fact the you get to know a river/venue once you have fished it for some time, and then you will know what areas don't
hold fish - but what if you could fish 1 of 2 swims both good swims and well known to produce good fish but you just had a feeling that one swim would fish
well - would you fish it on the strenth of a gut feeling ?
I knew that the swim I fished and caught the raoch on would produce fish, I'd fished it before but something just drew my to fish it that night |

I would give the swim a go, but i only take what i need when i go fishing so i can
fish lots of different swims in one session . When i arrive at the river i always know which area im going to ,but if a swim stops me on the way it would be daft not to have a go. Cheers John |

I picked a swim last weekend simply cuz it looked nice and a bit national geograhpic.

When I started looking for Barbel I picked the swims that I had lost good fish on. I then fished the swims that were ignored by others because I had caught
fish in an ignored swim. So I have learnt not to ignore any swim on the small river that I fish as any swim can hold fish under the right circumstances. It is
only a question of finding what are the right circumstances as it is very difficult to see the fish. I will also move from swim to swim even if I am catching
just to see what is happening in other swims - looking for the right circumstances. I won't tonight as I want to see what happens in a particular swim into
the early morning.
So you can say head not heart |

My noble Lord
I rely almost totally on instinct. I have no skill - or next to none. So gut feeling guides me almost always. There are, of course, the usual known spots to fish, but when I'm trying to find new areas I often just go on how I feel. And it often pays off - both on rivers and stillwaters. So I'm with you on this one. |

Lord Paul, I,am definately with you on this one, having on numerous occasions been drawn to a particular piece of water for no obvious reason, and catching
some good fish in both still and moving water, sometimes the draw is almost magnetic, just got to be there, maybe we are more in-tune with nature than we
realise!!!!

Moreover, sometimes I make a cast that I just know unequivocally will catch me a fish - be it a perfect cast, short fling, underarm fling sometimes, just
sometimes it feels right.

Peter you maybe right - some of us are just more in tune with nature than others

How true you speak your lordship
As a keen naturalist myself,I spend many hours wandering around and indeed get drawn to certain swims and sometimes being there just as nature intended is whats it is all about. Hope to meet up again with you on the river again soon |

Pick swims with my head and decide how long I'm there for with my heart...

Good topic. The harder I think about where to fish, the worse I do. When I just relax and pick the swim that feels right, I almost invariably do better.
Personally, I don't think it's sixth sense, so to speak. I think it's more to do with the way the person interprets the world around them. I would be interested to know if there is a link between how an angler selects his swim, and their 'learning style' - whether they find it easier to understand diagrams or text, type of thing. |

i think it's more to do with fishing experience than anything else.
