Just looking for any advice/info from anyone who has been. Any recommendations who to go with? When to go/not to go? I've had a good Google around, and there seems to be so many companies saying "we are the best" etc, that I would prefer some honest opinions from people who have been. Posts: 1299 (11/07/08 09:51) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Steve, first bit of advice is to speak to someone who has been this year, lots of problems apparently, it was a total rat-race two years ago when i last went,and its got worse, for what its worth we used to book with the Bavarians, they were pretty good and you can have an air-con apartment on the river complete with boat if you want to splash out.

Posts: 817 (14/07/08 09:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Depends what you want really - the real monsters are bellow the dam at Meqinenza (spelling?) but fishing can be shoulder to shoulder and more of a waiting game. Where I would head (and probably am in October) is to the Upper lake where the fish are smaller but more prolific (we still had 13 100+ fish up to 142 last time in only 4 days fishing). We used Catfish Capers which were pretty good also the Bavarian Guide Service comes well recomended from friends. drop me a mail guybaxendale@hotmail.com for any more info

Posts: 213 (14/07/08 17:40) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	cant beat catfish capers based in caspe 7 of us went oct 06 unguided and filled our boots with 140 odd cats in the week to 160lb and carp to over 40lb we all had 10+ ton ups each, if you dont get a ton up with them you get a free return trip and a cracking bunch of lads, good lads holiday with plenty of beer in the apartment and a chinese down the road cheap as chips too Kipper Bait 08............applicate presentate obliterate (in my own little world bill )

Going back again in October with a view to trying for a monster in mequinenza and a couple of days on the top lake at chiprana to get the rod bent. Cant fault catmaster they are brilliant. We had 49 fish between us on the last trip and we all had 100lb + fish with a best of 170lb

The bedding was filthy and obviously not cleaned since the previous occupants. The gear we had was basic. They gave us one rig and lead per rod and pointed at the wall. There was no advice or help. When we had our first cat we had no scales, sling or idea how to handle the thing. we basically had to rummage around and find our own kit and fend for ourselves. I will say the boat was very good but that was all. I could go on because there was a lot of other negativities but I wont. We caught one cat each all week after venturing up river and fishing near a party with catmaster tours. We had help from John Deakin of catmaster and he afforded us his time and knowledge and not once did he slag off the bavarian when he heard our plight, very commendable in my eyes. We were lucky enough to catch a 170lb cat and if it wasn't for john we wouldn't have been able to handle it, a huge learning curve and eye opener. I will say that I have spoken to others who have had good trips with bavarian but they were guided and stopping in the apartments not the tenko camp. Each to their own i'm with catmaster tours

Posts: 1316 (15/07/08 08:14) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Re;Bavarians, you don't have to slum it in the shacks, they have a block of apartments on the other side of the river with their own boat jetty and of course your boat,the use of which cannot be underestimated if you want to fish properly on the lower river, they supply excellent guides as well if you need and are willing to pay for them! Or you can go and fish shoulder to shoulder along 'Pellet alley' in a permenantly baited swim catching the same fish that were caught by the last party the week before,you pays your money and takes your choice. we've had numerous 100 plussers up to182lb fishing both guided and un-guided with the Bavarians. Having said all that, i doubt i would ever go back there personally, as i much prefer the upper river, we did one day with the excellent Martin Walker last time we went,had a really good day in beautiful surroundings,we had 20 odd cats in an afternoon (6 over 100) and he has an apartment with its own slipway that you can hire complete with boat so you can go guided or DIY ( which is much more viable than the lower river) However as i said earlier things have changed a fair bit in the last year or so, and i would suggest you speak to someone who has been this year, particularly to Mequinenza.

John Deakin was superb as was our personal guide Ashley Scott. Like the poster above, I learned loads in the week I was out there and it made me think that I would have really struggled on my own.

The last time I went out to mequinenza we fished up the segre above the bird sanctuary it was beautiful up there and we never saw another angler. We did a couple of days on the top lake and that was very busy but enjoyable.

Theres nothing serious about it its just good fun in different surroundings. Lets face it lots of rods in a line waiting for a take, pellet alley, doesn't that sound familiar for any Carp lake or busy barbel stretch of a river in this country. I treat the Ebro for what it is a bloody good fishing holiday with a few beers and a nice meal at the end of the day. You have a great time Steve!
