Nutritious baits. making fishing harder? |

|
Hi, Barbel fishing is getting more popular. The fishing seems to be getting harder especialy on the severn etc. Could this be in some part due to all the
more nutritious baits we now use. pellets made for the fish farming industry and Hnv boilies etc

Dave,
Not the type of bait but the amount thrown in. Restrict everyone to a pint of pellets or half a pound of bolies per session. We would all be able to catch hungry fish which were competing for food then!! Mark |

Everything goes in circles, I had most my sucsess last year on both the Severn and Warks Avon, on the old castor and hemp or white maggott earlier in the
season.
The other thing iv'e noticed this year its going back to normal river seasons, 1st the Bream, then the silly season of all species, then it will be September for the barbel then onto winter chub n roach, I have never know the bream switch on the Severn like they have for years. Only time will tell.
River angler's go with the flow.

Restrict everyone to a pint of pellets or half a pound of bolies per session What!! Seriously - that would last me 2 or 3 weeks, at least two sessions per week.. |

Maybe I am Nick, but what's the point of piling in the bait?
Amusing story - last week I turned up early at my chosen venue to find a guy fishing a popular swim.. He'd been there all night, and packed up a couple of hours after I arrived. Two hours later another angler arrived (hi Dinger!) and fished the same swim for a couple of hours.. Later on (teatime) another guy turns up to fish the swim, possibly another allnighter.. Iff everybody fishing the swim used a pint of pellets or a pound of boilies nobody would be catching! In fact, hang on...that could explain it.... |

Blanking Bloke,
Agreed that amount of bait would last me many sessions. I just think many people are using much more than that making the fish full up and therefore more difficult to catch. We are I think saying the same thing maybe with a differeing view on quantities. Personally I fish a dozen pellets per swim and then move on the kennet or a small PVA bag every hour if holding out in one swim. Mark |

I suppose it all depends on the size and nature of the river being fished!! Jay |

Mark has a point.
Throop is just down the road from me and as everybody knows, it attracts many visiting anglers all trying to catch it's barbel or legendary chub - especially at this time of year. Now, it's not a venue I like to fish too often but the bailiff's down there tell me that the amount of bait that gets thrown in on a daily basis beggars belief. The successful anglers will use very little bait as the fish tend to drift into a swim, take a few morsels, then bugger off for a while. So the less bait in the swim, the greater your chances of a pick up. Too many would-be barbel anglers come onto the rivers from the lakes, throw in a load of bait, and expect the barbel to be queueing up waiting to be caught. That rarely happens in my experience and often anglers will go home disappointed. There really is no short cut. Good water craft and a craftily placed hookbait will win every time. |

As Jay said, it depends on what river you fish and also how pressured the section is where you are fishing. To see 1/2kg of monster crab 14mm pellets disappear
in a matter of minutes is a real eye opener. The barbel didn't even get a look in as 3 carp scoffed the lot.
