Matt, the problem you have on the Kennet is lack of day ticket access available, its all sown up by various clubs and private syndictes and the only barbel venue I know of that offers days tickets is Aldermaston Mill, I personally havent fished there but I have been told it can be very busy with people fighting for swims when the gates open, I think its quite expensive too. Cemex at Burghfield may do day tickets, I am not sure on that though.
You can get a club card which will give you access to Kennet barbel fishing for around £60, Thatcham AA have 2 very nice stretches one of which can be night fished, RDAA have most of the Kennet between Padworth and Reading including the famous Upper and Lower Benyons so that one gives the best value although no nightfishing on the normal permit. I know guys join one of the clubs I am in from up north and come down barbeling for a week at a time a couple of times a year.
Your other option would be find some one who is a member of a local club who would be willing to take you on guest tickets.
Cheers
Kevin
