I have been mainly fishing the rother and the hampshire avon for the last couple of years ,but have access to a few stretches of the arun on a couple of
tickets.
Has anyone had a good go for the barbel in the arun? Would you tell me if you did? |

hi all .i have started to concentrate on the arun now.after twenty odd years of off and on fishing it, i feel like i have caught enough half decent fish from various waters to not be that bothered about blanking and really fancy the challange .went today for the morning,no fish but loved it,i even dreamt about it last night ? (a bit weird, i guess) |

Hello,
Bailiff, There are some good fish in the Arun but they are few and far between, any Arun barbel is well deserved. I managed 9 trips last season and one bream to show for my pitiful efforts. A couple of mates of mine managed to catch however. I will probably have a go in the winter if time permits. If you find them, please be careful not to give too much info to the lurkers and be careful when posting photos as you will discover your swim is full of anglers if you give too much away. Good luck to all who have a go. Jeff |

Just been reading in last weeks angling times of a record Arun Barb of 12lb 10oz caught by Paul Martin while fishing for Carp.

I can assure you that i catch my fair share of bream usually
Maybe i have just been lucky so far or maybe i'm in the wrong place, no change there then. |

Not exactly sight fishing tactics being employed on the Arun then? How far do I need to drag my enormous bucket filled to the brim with corn and hemp? Need to
dust off the old Barbour Trench coat, Speedia and Optix Cormorants.
Cream teas at Houghton? How very civilised. Now I wonder if the pub across the road serves Ringwood Old Thumper……………………. |

More barbel on the Arun than the Hants Avon and Dorst Stour put together.
In my humble opinion. |

Marqis cha cha,
If so, i'd love to know where? What have you got in that paper bag? Is it a dose of vitamin C-e. Or maybe something a little stronger? Jeff |

I much prefer Solicitor In Studio, but Cha Cha still does it for me.
Mr Pharmacist was a crowd pleaser when I bootleggeg them in Malaga last year, but I can take it or leave that one now. The Fall have ruined my life. Barbel fishing has done much the same, and Smoothound fishing is currently causing much distress with my wife. I wrote an article once about barbel in the Arun in Barbel Fisher. They've been there for years. I did a proper campaign for them on the Rother years ago until I started catching the same fish over and over again. The bailiff on this stretch was pretty hostile at the time as he and his chums wanted it all for themselves. The Arun is a different animal though. It's the Sussex river severn. Vast tidal river. Barbel can thieve here and potentially become the dominant species. The NRA stocked the Arun with Severn fish many years ago. I've got the documentation. I did my homework on this river and the Sussex Ouse. Never fished either for barbel though as I was chasing shadows on the Dorset Stour. However, my focus is moving closer to home. I wondered up to the Arun last year a number of times and spotted guys pre baiting with pellet. They were wearing Gore-Tex camouflage gear, presumably so they could hide from the cows. It's not rocket science as I doubt the bucked of pellet was aimed at bream. I have seen photos of 3 doubles caught in one session (but that was after a month's pre-baiting). However, this is in an area Joe public can't fish, but Joe public can fish 200 yards upstream. Very pale looking fish compared with the Avon. Fantastic Sussex barbel. It's all public footpath, so my advice to you is to go for a stroll and see who's about. You'll probably come across quite a few 'carp' angers lol !! |

Mr Pharmacist will you please, give me some energy!
Despite spending some winter sesh's on the southern severn, it fails to produce the goods. Friends have caught some fish in close proximity, I still fail to get my head around this murky ditch. I know what you mean, I know they exist but they are elusive. It will be years to reach the same level, providing no polution damage takes place, as happened before, to reach the same notoriety as the other ditch you mention. There seems to be no smaller fish coming through and the few that are about must be in old age, given their general bulk? Something for the retired specialist I think? ill stick to the Royalty methinks for now! At least i know i'm in with a chance there. Regards, Jeff |

The Kennet doesn't seem to be fishing that well, so a friend and I i are going to give the Arun a good go this season.
We have already baited up several stretches and found some likely looking swims but unlike the Avon the Arun is very difficult to spot fish as it seem to remain coloured all year round. shajazzi
