All rivers are have started slow this season |

It's seems rather strange that if you skip through all of the river reports that not many barbel are being caught on a regular basis. I was told today that
one of the country's top Barbel anglers has only managed 7 fish since the start of the season. Hearing that gives you something of a boost but does not
exactly inspire you to get out there and have another go. Still if your not out there your not going to get them. Interested to see if the Moon phase lads have
noticed anything, ie failures on expected good nights.

From a personal view this season seems to have been alot better than the last. I have have managed to catch 14 fish in 3 days with 4 of those being doubles. I
have had more success with boilie than pellet so far, maybe the barbel are wising up lol.
I have also, again from a personal view, caught far less chub than usual but those that have taken the bait have been of a good size. |

Are you talking about me already? I've only been back on this board for five minutes!
I had seven Barbel on my first trip of the season at the Belmont stretch in Hereford.lol
Thanks to Woody's angling centre for putting me onto the fish. |

I have had 1 barbel in the last 4 days which by my last 2 seasons standards is pretty good.
It could still be the after effects of last seasons floods with many old swims that used to produce all the time either being altered or simpliy not being there. Again that could all be wrong but that's how I see it. Rich

Since my blank on opening 3-days, and subsequent reports, I decided not to start again for at least another two weeks (from now) as the barbel are not ready -
for me, it's my opinion.

Well im tempted to try and find a site call chub fishing world as barbel seem to be using them as infantry and testing everything that is put before them !

Personally i'm finding it very slow - and by very slow i mean no Barbs at all - in 6 sessions so far! That in itself can be explained by lots of things,
but what i'm finding very strange for this year, at this time of the year is that during the day, with relatively warm, dry, sunny weather, there are
virtually no smaller fishing surfacing. There's plenty of flies landing on the water, but it seems like the rivers are very dormant at the moment?!?!
The weather & conditions don't seem to be too bad, it's not 35 degrees after all. The only thing that i can think is that it's now a year since Gordon Brown's been in office. Maybe the fish have all made the move early and packed up their bags and moved to Canada?!? |

I haven't seen a Gudgeon (spelling) at all so far.
Plenty jumping though. Rich

Only three weeks into the season and I would not be too concerned.
The fact is that this year we have not had the spring floods and from a Thames perspective it is gin clear and does not feel very Barbel friendly. I wouldnt says its fishing any better or worse its just summer conditions. Fish hard in the Autumn onwards or around decent spells of rain and low pressure. Lots of other species love these conditions. |

Looks like we've got rain and low pressure for the next week! Should feel more like late september than early July!
And you've made a good point Dav - there's always Tench, roach, Dace, Perch -- they should all be active in the Thames (and lakes)at the moment - really should put down my barbel rod and get the float rod out for a bit! |

Mole wrote: That certainly doesn't apply to the Royalty which fished its nuts off for the first week and a half. Indeed I noticed a post on the Hants. Avon thread where a rather more experienced angler had 13 barbel to 11lb 13oz over three sessions. There were plenty of newcomers who caught 5, 6 or 7 barbel in a day and shed loads of new pb's came out for newcomers and regulars alike. |

Shockingly bad for me on the Ouse at the moment! Current theories from the river bank seem to be :- 1. Some fish are still spawning - I always thought that this activity was concentrated into a few days not spread over a few weeks? 2.Fish have not dropped back from spawning grounds and are thus localised. 3. Too much bait - heard one recent example of 8kg of pellets going into a swim - I havent used that amount in two seasons! - encouraged by the bait suppliers 'make it happen here' bait establishment / pre-bait carp fishing mentality. 4. Cormorant (/ Otter?) predation during the winter. 5. Change to normal British summer conditions - we have been spoilt over the last few years with good periods of settled weather ( last year was an anomoly all round!) Any thoughts? Regards Paul. |
