Does anyone have info on any stretches on the York book that won't be over populated on a Saturday and that might produce a few?

Zippy,
As long as there are no matches booked (check the YDAA website - http://www.communigate.co.uk/york/ydaa/index.phtml), most stretches are usually fairly quiet. As for "producing a few" - the Ouse just doesn't do that. Ignore gcb - he is obviously making it up! R. |

Geoff,
You're really in a purple patch at the moment, aren't you? What with last weeks efforts on the Swale, and now this! That is a real result for the Ouse - multiple catches are very rare, in my experience. What's your secret? And let's hope you get it all out of your system before Sept. 7th! R. |

Cheers robin
GBC, do you do a lot of daytime fishing? I work shifts and get plenty of time off if you are willing to meet up one day? Am new to the reletively barbeling and would appreciate any advice etc. Paul |

Best way to check on match bookings on the Ouse is to look in Darren Starkeys fishing column in' the press '[York]on Friday evenings , this can be
read online I think ..

Yes, we're still on for the 7th Sept. The stretch is booked, i.e. we don't need to buy daytickets, but I'll be charging a "match fee" to
cover the booking costs.
What's the deal with the sponsorship? Can you email me details? R. |

Geoff,
Just seen your "Red Letter day". Cracking result mate! I was wondering whether I'd be more chuffed with a double or with the day you had out! Well done! Steve |

pm sent robin with details.
Zippy all my fishing is during the day usually between 8 a.m and 2 p.m. If you can fish midweek give me a pm and we will try to sort something out. 18 barbel, 7 sessions, 2 blanks, 4 different rivers but not one fish reached the 7 lb mark on the scales. Should I change something or just wait? geoff

average size barbel | ||

As one or two folks have commented ,catches of this number of Barbel in the Ouse are unusual . From my own experience 2 barbel in a 3 or 4 hour session is
good , 3 and 4 fairly unusual and 6 exceptional . As to why , well one could speculate till the cows come home , they may be still grouped up after spawning ,
you may have hit on a holding spot that the fish find particularly conducive . When I have caught well the river has either been unusually high or extremely
low and fish shoal up in very tight areas , whatever the reason obviously a good swim , be interesting to see if it remains consistent in different conditions
/ time of year . Regarding size of barbel , in my view a barbel over 7lb is a good Ouse fish , I think it is very heartening that smaller barbel are showing up
in good numbers , obviously a healthy stock . I don't know what baits / tactics Geoff is using , from my own observations smaller baits , particularly
maggots and casters seem to attract a smaller stamp of fish , but I'm sure others have different experiences . As to catching big barbel, well it all
depends on what you define as big , in my view 10lb + barbel are fairly thin on the ground , I think a 9lber as an excellent specimen for the Ouse . Does size
matter , of course it does , but the fact that they are coming out in reasonable numbers is the main thing
River conditions , last evening mother Ouse was at NSL with a reasonable pace and a tinge of colour , a warm evening with a high water temp of 62f saw me take my first Ouse eel of the season , must have been 4oz . Barbel were rolling away all around the swim flicking their pectorals at me with disdain completely ignoring my baits , never mind it was a nice evening .

I think I agree with Mike.As there are a lot of newcomers on the river I think it is important we but 'Yorkshire Barbel'fishing targets in real life
terms before people get to dissapointed.
There are many anglers I know who have never caught a Barbel. To catch a Ouse Barbel is an acheviement,to catch more than one in a session is exceptional and to catch a double is a career highlight. I think a 8lb fish is a good fish and it is good to see alot of smaller ones about. There is no real pattern,if there was I would catch a lot more ...but the one secret is get a bait in the water as often and as long as you can. If you look at the amount of time some guys on here put in ,the successful ones put in alot and I mean, alot of time. My target every year is to first catch a fish.Quite hard. Second beat my Ouse PB of 8lb 12 oz ten years old very hard. Catch a double very very very hard. But as I am the reinging Tommie king ( until the 7th, Bowes be challenged) I am not bothered because I remember fishing is about enjoyment and not targets. Good luck for the weekend ,tight lines. Ken. |

Mike/Ken
You've had me going back through my records of last year. Your notes made me realise that my first year on the Ouse may have been a very good one and hence why my average and top weights for this year are down on last! That's not a negative though, most times it's simply great to be out on such a wonderful location. I'd agree, there's no simply way to success here, you need to put in the time and be prepared for a significant lack of success! It doesn't come without surprises though, I had a 4oz pike last night! Wise words ruffemeister Ken . We can call you that now as the self proclaimed Tommy king is somewhere over the Atlantic in a plane at the moment
Ken you are spot on ,fishing is all about enjoyment and just being there . This
said I do set myself little targets to spur me on when the fishing is hard or the weather inclement . One for example is trying to catch a Barbel in every
month of the open season , a realistic target in the hazy days of summer but when your on the banks in the hail and snow it can sometimes seem a little '
optimistic ' ! Lets all get those personal bests beaten that is always a target worth aiming for , and you can have a lot of fun on the way . Tight lines

Agree 100% mike. Many anglers keep records of their captures as a way to inform on their fishing. To set targets for the future e.g 'I'd like to catch
a bigger one/ more/ from different rivers/ only enhances the experience for me but I am also happy just to be on the riverbank.

Ouse conditions | ||
|
Last evening dour session on mother Ouse , river low , and clear [ or as clear as the Ouse ever gets] , extensive roving and nettle rash acquisition produced 2
little chub on the maggot feeder , and no I wasn't trying to catch tommy ruffe , I will leave that to the experts . No barbel in evidence however the
evening was brightened by the sight of not one but two leaping salmon one a real biggy , an astonishing sight to behold . All that rain on saturday afternoon
should be running through fairly soon and hopefully improve prospects with the barbel . Tight lines to all

Mike those salmon must have been a magnificent sight. I would love to see something like that. Any idea where they would be heading for?

I will ask next time one comes through.
Seriously Geoff , they are
always heading upstream so I am presuming they are on their way to spawning beds to breed . I do know that Salmon spawn on the Ure , not sure about the Swale
although they definetly travel up the river . I am sure someone on here will have more knowledge / information / observations . They really are a magnificent
sight and seem so incongruous on the stately Ouse . I still associate leaping salmon with swiftly flowing rivers and boulder strewn falls , spotting them on a
saturday evening in the ouse as it plods gentle pace across the vale of York seems weird . Anyway enough of these musings lets get one caught !
