There wasabout 15 of us, everyone blanked apart from the winner who won on 8oz of bleak caught in the last hour. That was last night,Sunday's match was won with a 1lb 1ozcatch of a small chub and a bleak. Is the riverslow everywhere or is it just the lower severn by upton etc. Should i travel up to hampton loade area ? How are the BAA waters fishing? cheers all.

Up until the other night I had a few grave concerns about the Barbel population of the Severn after the two big floods of June/July 2007 . In my expirience Sabrina never seemed to recover, even in the Autumn of 2007 and it did cross my mind for a Millie second that they had all been washed out to sea. This of course is total nonsense But something did seem a miss, and match weights were down. I know its early days,and June is always usually a bit of a slow month but has anyone else been mind full of this or can anyone put there finger on it. Is it the washed out Carp in the river system taking over. I personally don't think so, not yet anyway ! I can only go on my own finding and my returns were well down in Sept/Oct /Nov 07 An explosion of Catfish/ Pike munching there way through? I doubt it !? There are some of the best River anglers in the country on here. What are your views chaps? I may be sticking my neck out here only time will tell. What were your returns like in the Autumn Were they up or down ? Lets hope my initial inner feelings are prov-en totally wrong, I hope so ! I am certainly no expert, I am just interested in others anglers findings . Should create a bit of a debate if nothing else. The booming Seventies and Eighties were never going to last for ever and nature always goes full circle ! Should prove interesting Tight Lines

Should prove interesting Tight Lines I was talking the very same thing late last night on the lower WA with two other anglers I am afraid our opinions is that the river systems have been damaged by the floods. usual early summer haunts are just not producing , I can only hope that all the barbel are still in the river system, and are enjoying their salacious life style on some remote gravel runs in Wales or where ever

He is convinced that he has had decent sized Barbel rolling in front of him but can't buy a take!! I must say I am also convinced that the fish are still in their usual haunts but for whatever reason just are not feeding well.... ....another blank 6 hours for me on the Lower last night !!! Paul

Certainly the early season was more productive around Shrewsbury with the almost continuous high water levels. So far this season I've only fished a few times, preferring to stay with tench until the river settles down. The fish are still there, I watched large numbers of barbel and chub spawning during the close season on their usual gravels. By late July I expect all will be back to normal, though I think it will require a bit of effort to locate the fish. One direct result of the floods has been to markedly change a lot of bottom contours, and destroy a lot of weed, that will have a huge influence on where they are happy, particularly for daytime fishing. By the way, congratulations on your monster catch, was that from Rossall by any chance? Always managed to get good catches there when I had a Lymm card, but nothing of that magnitude! Old enough to know better....young enough not to care!

When I was out at the weekend I heard/saw several fish rolling, especially after dark, but couldn't buy a take! I tried several swims that produced last summer - might be worth trying some new areas? There were also quite a few salmon moving as well.

That is very true, My only blank this season has been in a swim which has a 6ft x 12 ft hole close to the nearside bank which drops to about 6ft deeper than the surrounding area and is always stuffed with fish............or at least it was.......When I fished it last week it just felt wrong so I put a big lead on and plumbed it................it was gone, to confirm it I put my waders on and checked it out with my landing net handle and found the bottom was full with foot ball sized rocks probably swept in by the floods and the rock which had caused the drop off in the first place and was the size of a wheely bin was gone.

For once this actually looks quite genuine and must be the largest authenticated from around these parts IMHO. Had a few hours last night locally. Hard work, only a couple plus a chub to my uncle who i took fishing for the first time in 12 years or so. Really wished the barbel fell to his rod though, typical!
