I know i do not know its exact time of death, but i have good enough knowledge to know that if the fish was any fresher it would have been swimming, Its a
shame i did not take a picture as any person would had believed it had just been caught, perhaps it did die through something other than what i believe, but if
you could see where i was fishing and the river above me, you also would find it hard to think of anything else. I will leave it at that.

Like Punk I too once had a fish die on me, though in my case it had something to do with the trebles I stuck in it.
I once foul hooked a bream in the eye too, that was nasty. The point is that no matter how hard you try to do right by the fish sometimes things dont work out, this nice barbel died, maybe someone didnt take enough care, maybe thats not the case at all and its time was up. If you really wish to avoid such things dominoes is a fine passtime. I had to post as it seemed to me that this was such a silly thread, no disrespect to its creator. |

"if it makes a people think then who cares what has been said"
Well there you go, if nothing else, that's the message I preach too. Don't stand when holding a fish for photography Use an unhooking mat if you are taking the fish onto dry land. Let the fish rest before letting it go it's own way. |

Thames bloke,
"you see people don't get it",............... Of course I get it, a fish might have died through someones neglect,.......... happens at every match and every day on rivers throughout this land. How many eels have you had in your time that took it well down, bit rare these days is your eel, cant breed those at Calverton. Small perch are a bit good at "gobbing it" too for that matter and keel over at the drop of a hat. As I said,......... happens every day, Shouldnt but it does. I suppose they are not the "Holy Barbel" though. |

"you see people don't get it, its not the fish died, but the possibility it was through neglect or a who cares approach".
I see it is only a possibility now then thamesbloke a bit different to your original posting as follows.
"Just to add a couple of things, This fish was a very powerful fish, big, muscular and strong and i do not believe it died through spawning, it was floating down the side which is fished and its mouth had a hook mark in it, I would say this barbel put up one hell of a fight, But was not given the time to recover, someone put this fine specimen back way to soon and did not know what they were doing".
"Well there you go, if nothing else, that's the message I preach too".
Is that really what you were preaching when you posted this?
"Oh dear, and people wonder why we make a "public" fuss when we see the mishandling of fish"!
Look's more like an ill informed assumption and knee jerk to me based on no real facts. A nice fish is dead no one knows the real facts of the matter it's a crying shame none of us can be sure that all the fish we return survive the ordeal we can only do our best.
Please yourselves |

So, there seems little doubt that a barbel died - in 7 pages of posts at least this has not been challenged, which is good.
