Managed a 3 day session on my club stretch. Ended up with 14 barbel to 8lb 5oz, which looked much bigger, lost 3 and am now cream crackered. Nice few days
though. River looked perfect.

I believe if you click the heels together and say "there's no place like Wasing" you end up on the Warren Beat!!
Ian, used a bivvy, couldn't cope with kipping in the car again. It was like the Taj Mahal of Brimpton Common. Pure luxury. Hopefully back on Wednesday for the day. Can't wait to see this rod. Gonna be a winner I think. Best of luck and speak to you soon mate. |

Kennet half way down page 2?..........................................this will never do!
Short session after work. Had a slow take when I was on the phone ..........."gotta go - fish!" Hit it and the fish went absolutely mental. Screamed of downstream in one
continuous run that seemed to go on forever and even though I put a lot of pressure on it I just couldn't stop it. The fish finally stops when it dives
into a snag or very thick weed and also took the line under a nearside overhanging tree. So in the space of probably 10-15 seconds I've gone from a
totally relaxed state, chatting on the phone to a situation where the adrenaline is in full flow and I'm hanging precariously over the river with my arm
and the rod at full stretch trying to prevent the line snagging in the tree and find a way to get the fish out of the snag. (Trefor West describes describes it
perfectly in his latest book. Can't remember the exact wording but something like..."The barbel is the one of the few fish I know that can transform a
moment of total tranquility to total pandemonium in a second.")
"I'm going t o lose his one" I thought. However, after a
long time trying different angles and letting the line go slack I finally manage to free the fish and work it back upstream without getting caught in the
overhanging tree.
And the monster that caused all this chaos?.................................................barely 5lbs!!! Even when I'm unhooking it and its in the landing net its thrashing around constantly. A really short fish but with a large head and very thick body.... a real bruiser! I love this sport.

Had an evening session yesterday (2nd July). River looks in really good nick. Had 3 barbel to 8lb 11oz and a brace of chub - biggest just over 5lb - but really
lank and spawned out - will be MUCH bigger in the winter!

Gavin,
This happened to me a few times last year and it is very frustrating.................what actually happens is that a chivalrous young male barbel of around 5lb is swimming along and sees a beautiful 19lb female tied to a snag with a hook in it's mouth, in a true gentlemanly manner it removes the hook from the lady, places it in it's own mouth, making a selfless sacrifice and swims out into the river again. You land the 5lber without the knowledge that the original fish you hooked was 19lb, I on the other hand always know that it was much bigger before it entered the snag. Welcome to my world!!

Had another go today and had 1 small trout.
When I say small I mean 2". I think there where more bigger one's in the swim as I was getting very strange bites that were lighting fast and had the the rod tip bobbing around like the head off a nodding dog. Ever time I struck I could feel the fish swim off and I'm sure I could feel teeth grinding the line the hook also had none of the green coating left after a while. Moved up to a wear area and within the last hour had a good take but it went up stream towards a snaggy island and the hook link (a new 1) snapped. Saving grace of the day was when a group of people at Reading train station thought I was a nutter with a rifle, the looks I have got!

Rich. Did your mate catch a small chub on a lump of meat the other day?
You looked knackered after that walk. What with the bridge being no good. Peter |

Hi Folks I had an afternoon/evening session last night fishing in the Padworth area and had a nice fish of 10lb 15oz, I have to say when I saw the size of its mouth I thought it was gonna be bigger than that, I reckon it was hugh in the winter, I am not complaining though as that is my 3rd biggest barbel to date and also my first proper fish after a slow start to the season. It took a halibut pellet at around 8.15pm I hooked one earlier at around 5.30pm but it came off, it was my own fault as the hook was blunted from getting snagged the cast before, I am going to be checking my hook points before every cast from now on, lesson learned there. The river is still up and was also very muddy, almost looked like tea last night. I am off out again tonight and after yesterdays sucess I am briming with confidence, I will post up my results on here Here is a pic of my first proper fish this season

Well done Kev,
Had a early day stint today and just at last doors I had a wrap around and a lovely 5lb barbel on my mat. I was in the middle of replacing a lost hook length on my second rod when fish struck. My fish mate had only just come over to say he had packed up because in his words "I'm bored". 2 fish this season already double last year's tally roll on 2 weeks
when I can get back out there.
