I walked along the river earlier in the day and it was so low it looked painful, I hoped there would have been some heavy rain but it didnt come. There were
just a couple of small Chub in the weir and the gravel runs were only 5-6 inches deep, my heart sank as I thought there couldn't possibly be any decent
sized fish around. Anyway I stuck to my guns and decided to do an 8pm-midnight session even choosing to miss the Euro 2008 final as I just wanted to try and
had been waiting all week with that 'what if?' feeling I knew the football would take second place. So I heeded the advice of not being able to catch
fish where you can't see them, but instead opting to try and catch them where although I still couldn't see them - this was only due to the fact that
the water was too deep - so at least they might be there, a deep swim on a bend with some over hanging trees. A couple of small Chub on pellet confirmed that
at least there were some fish around, I suspected the overhanging tree would hold Chub but would it be a Chub-only swim?

Well done, now you know what your looking for this is only the start,i wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the only Boris in that swim as i have found
the smaller fish in the shoal usually get to the bait first not that 5lb is small for that river, again well done!

Well done! You'll remember that first barbel for the rest of your life. No stopping you now.

Very well done Robin. Regarding snag fishing, my advice would be that it is seldom if ever necessary, as by feeding an area several yards upstream of the snags
it is nearly always possible to draw fish to the table.
If it is 7 or 8 years old, the growth rate of this barbel has not been particularly good. There again, you don't know for sure that this is one of the stockies do you, or if it is one of their offspring? |

The main thing is that you have learned a valuable lesson and earned that fish through your own efforts.
Well done! Now apply what you have learned to catch some more, now that you know what sort of swim to look for. On small rivers they are rarely far away from cover until after dark. Bill |
