The two swims featured and explained in the 'Barbel Even Closer' dvd on the Royalty are getting fished a lot of late, some nice fish coming out. Worthwhile viewing if your going to visit the Royalty, not specifically due to the swims, but the watercraft and information on rigs in good. Excellent bit of filming, amazing to see the fish held up in the snag and see how the feed moves on the river bed. |

Hi Bazza, yes it was. I ended up with 5 up to 10.9.
Glad you had a few fish. It was good to meet you. Mickytrout, the fishing at Ringwood is good, but at the moment a little slow. It will pick up soon though. Regards John. |

Second weed cut commencing 1st July. | ||
|
The Avon south of Ringwood was cut last week to reduce levels to meet EA specified levels. The agreed weed cut was 40% width of channel to lower the river.
Unfortunately the level has not dropped to its required hight so a second cut will commence from 1st of July starting at Ringwood and continuing down stream.
Natural England has agreed a 75% cut for the second run through!
For anyone wishing to fish Severals this week expect to contend with weed boats and spooked fish..........and expect another poor recruitment year! Darren. |

Notice of weedcutting | ||
|
Notice of weedcutting:
Ringwood to Avon Causeway: Tuesday 8th - Friday 11th July Selective 75% cut in areas still causing excessively raised water levels. Weed to be removed at Burton Boom. Criteria: Field conditions with excessive saturated topsoil preventing established land management practices (compatible with SSSI/biodiversity interests) being undertaken over a significant area. |

Dont know about the rest of you Avon regulars but I have been finding the middle reaches very slow to get going this season.
It could be down to the cooler weather we have had at the start of the season. Had me first fish yesterday, a lovely looking 9lb er, along with a chub of 6.3. Lets hope this could be the start. Good luck all. Regards John. |

Fished Royalty yesterday had a nice sea trout, though no barbel. Still running high with colour, weed cutting upstream does not seem to have effected
fishing. Odd clump coming down, though no big deal.

Fished at Somerley yesterday. The river is so high. Lots of colour (for the Avon) so you can't see the bottom. Fields are completely sodden so take your
wellies.
Naturally I blanked. But I'm a novice on the Avon so I
wouldn't give up completely.

Flooded? | ||
|
Hi,
I'm planning a trip down to the Royalty on Saturday (12th) but with all this rain I'm concerned that the stretch might be flooded. Can anyone tell me what the river is like at the moment and, given that the worst of the rain should be gone today, how long the river normally takes to drop? I know it should be fishable during a flood but this is my first visit so I would prefer it to be near to 'normal' summer levels so that I can search out the swims a bit. Is it any better at the top of the fishery, above the tidal reach? Thanks in advance! Paul |

Hi Paul (griffin)
I can't help for the Royalty but upstream it is seriosuly high and wet! In theory this should be good barbel conditions but the Avon is a bit 'special' so I wouldn't want to make any promises. I would ring Davis Tackle. They know the score with the Royalty. I would also check out the Ringwood District Angling forum. They have a Royalty thread (it's also a Yuku web page) so should help.

Thanks, hopefully it will drop before Saturday. I don't know the river at all so have no idea how quick it runs off.
If it changes much over the next 24 hours I'd appreciate a post / PM Paul |

Hi Griffin saw river from bypass bridge on way home from work it was jusst within banks we had a lot of rain yesterday and more forecast tomorrow usually takes
a while to settle down can still fish in the right areas but a lot of swims will be unfishable, as you said in your post it might be better to wait until it

Great thanks for the update. Any suggestions on worthy swims (on the Royalty), given the river height?
It seems I have "barbelitis" and so I'm compelled to fish it no matter what the conditions |
