Posts: 470 (29/06/08 07:48) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Probably not relevant at all but.... ....last night as I struggled through the nettles from the waters edge to a suitable photo spot with a double in the net, getting stung over and again I wondered whether or not fish could get stung?? I would imagine the scales afford protection but what about on the head?? Anybody know?? Paul

I often walk through beds of nettles in shorts and hardly notice them stinging...If barbel don't know they can sting I doubt they will get stung.............

That said Paul , we had some fish just upstream from you , and noticed that the nettles were more thicker ,and have covered some of the swims that were clear this time last season . Do you think they are more widespread this year ?. Hatter

Posts: 593 (29/06/08 18:31) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Nettle stings very rarely pierce the skin but rather deposit the toxins onto the skin ,which then seep through the cracks /pores .the hairs on the leaves of the nettle only prickle the skin its only when they align with a crack/pore do become lodged there and separate from the leaf/stem. In nettle eating contests (yes grown men ,eating raw nettles) are allowed in some cases to wet there fingers and drink water (or more the more traditional beer) ,as wet hands don't get stung ,as the water dilutes any microscopic toxins down too safe levels ( The leaves and stems are covered with brittle, hollow, silky hairs that contain three chemicals, a histamine that irritates skin, acetylcholine which causes a burning feeling, and serotonin.) .Hence why nettle eaters frequently wash / rinse & drink water / beer �between eating the leaf's ,He who eats mosts leaf's wins (if he can still talk ,its a bonus) So on the principle wet hands don't get stung (well not as often anyway !) ,then wet slimey fish should perfectly fine .And as a natural instinct most people would probably automatically goto lift the net head above the obstacle of the nettle bed out of harms ways ,Instead of ramming it through it .And if you had too push your way back through nettles then the nets frame would probably push the nettles out of the way before the fish comes into contact with them lessoning the chance of it being stung. steve I try to be funny... but sometimes I merely look it Last Edited By: chavender 29/06/08 18:51. Rich It's funny how we don't sell guns but Toronto bangs!

Taking an anti histamine tablet, I suffer from hayfever so problem there, will reduce the symptoms. As for formic acid well it's the same as a wasp/bee sting I believe, this is what causes the swelling and having worked in laboratories for over twenty years can tell you it is extremely nasty stuff. Like the guys above posted a dock leave crushed up ,wetted and rubbed on the stings will cure the effects.

I don't know what but the old scout-pack leader used to say "for bees bi-carbonate, for wasps winegar" so I guess bee-sting is acid & wappies are alkaline. I got nettled a couple of weeks back & couldn't find a dock leaf so remembering skips old tip of scraping a sting out with a knife rather than pinching it with tweezers (& pumping more juice into yourself) I got the penkinfe out & scraped my hand a good few times. It was a while later that I realised there was no nettle rash! Those foreign stinging trees on Ray Mears programme did sound a bit dodgy, six months of stinging every time you get a bit hot or the wind blows on you....
