How's the river looking following the rain we have had the last couple of days?

Slightly strange question but I'll expalin later. What's the mobile signal reception like at Sockburn/ Dinsdale. Got a pass for Saturday
afternoon/evening but my youngest is off to cubs camp and the missus wants me to be contactable in case of emergency. She suggested I go to Croft but there are
matches on Saturday and Sunday so don't really fancy it. Normally I leave my phone switched off or on vibrate anyway when fishing as I'm trying to
escape for a few hours and lets face it nothing worse than a mobile ringing when your out on the bank.

Tried to find the access for Sockburn last night but wasn't quite sure were to park or the access. For the downstream section do you just follow the public
footpath sign near the houses on the right side of the road? Do you just park on the verge after the small bend in the road a few hundred yards before the
house on the right , Pond View I think it was called? Don't want to upset the locals and end up causing an upset. I drove down as far as that house then
saw a sign saying Sockburn Private road so gave up and went off elsewhere. No barbel but managed a couple of chub. Caught a chublet on a 12mm pellet, the
greedy little sod.

Yes you park on the right hand side of the road just before the entrance to the cottage (pond view). You can either follow the road straight on towards the
hall (to fish the loop), or as you have said follow the public footpaths down to the river either side of the road..I will forward you a map if you pm me.

Don't go through the gate to the right had side of pond view (before the house) - the farmer told me that the farm track is not a recognised point of
access? Apparently, they shoot in those woods and the game keeper wont be held responsible for any deaths!

Thanks JA75 I've got a copy the ATDAC maps and scanned them onto my drive at work. They are fairly poor quality drawings and have raised it on Thornaby
club website. You checked out the Leeds website? their maps are really good and you can go from a sketch to Google Earth or Google maps.
Suppose not wearing realtree camo helps as well then on Sockburn Another question guys, was thinking about the hooklength I'm using at the moment. I've tied a few rigs up about the 12" range but they seem a bit short when fully rigged with weight etc, Do you think a longer rig would be better? |

There's been quite a bit of debate on the site about hooklengths over the years - the archived threads may throw up more widom than I but I generally work
on the principle of: low clear water = longer mono hooklength (about 12 - 18 inches is fine, although I'm sure someone will disagree). If the river's
up I shorten it and use braid (have caught on as short as 3 inches in coloured water before). I work on the principle that if the fish can see the weight, line
etc - they probably won't go near it ... hope this helps.

all my hook lengths are about 24 inches and are braid plus coated braid ,i see no difference in the length of the trace ,no matter what size the trace is ,the
fish will still pull ur rod tip over .if they want the bait they will take it nomatter what .........

I was just thinking if the hooklength too short it could spook fish in clearer conditions as the terminal tackle would be more visible in the water. Tend to
use korda gripper leads or stone weights but just thought my links looked a little too close to weight etc.

Access to the loop at Sockburn - down the road towards the Hall, at cattle grid turn away from Hall and towards the farm, go right round the outside of the
field to your right and do not follow the track past the entrance to the farm, there is a large rottweiler chained up there, and the farmer does not like
anyone near the farm, if you stick to the far edge of the field it rejoins the track just past the farm near a little cottage which is being extended. That
puts you within spitting distance of the river.
Hooklengths - I only ever use mono, low diameter high strength usually start between 12 and 18 inches but experiment with longer if I feel the need particularly with particle baits or on the feeder. Never liked braid much, don't think it aids bite detection as barbel bites are not usually shy, and don't think it helps trick them cos they aren't that bright anyway once they are feeding. Before anyone kicks off I am not saying I am right and others are wrong - just that this works for me. |

One thing you have to remember is that barbel aren't small fish, up to 3 feet long, so unless you're going really long 6ft-9ft, the likely hood is that
it will spot or terminal tackle, also barbel don't just approach your baited area from directly downstream of it, snatch a few freebies, then go back the
way they came, they will approach from upstream, downstream and from the sides, they will pass over your bait, drift back downstream and have a good mooch
around, they will most likely have passed by your bait several times before you even get a twitch but as has been mentioned if they are feeding confidently
then they won't give a dam if your sat there in the swim with them. The most obvious parts of your tackle are the shiny bits, like swivels, which should be
covered with silicone tube and your mainline coming down from the rod. In sunny conditions light will hit your mono or fluro above the water and transmit light
down it under the surface, illuminating it almost like a fibre optic cable, there are a number of ways of getting round this problem, don't point the rod
high in the air, keep it low to the water, use a back lead or use some matt finish rig tubing brown or green colour. Hooklink length and material is a personal
thing, it comes purely down to preference and confidence, personally I use brown coated braid about 10"-12" blends in beautifully with the bottom of
the tees and is robust enough to take the knocks In winter or if I'm fishing for really difficult fish I will go to a bolt rig with 6"-3" and all
of the above unless the water is coloured, in which case I will ditch the backlead, a short hooklink combined with a bolt rig is far more efficient at self
hooking, meaning if a fish picks up your bait you stand a much better chance of it hooking itself, but it's only something that should be used when
it's hard, otherwise the fish will wise up to it, so don't play your best hand straight away, keep them guessing. Like Colin says experiment especially
if your using the feeder with an aggresive feeding approach sometimes the fish will back off the feeder so longer will pick up fish, sometimes they will attack
the feeder so then shorten up.

I thought the regulars on this river may like to know a Catfish in the 1-2Lb bracket was caught last night on the free stretch at Broken Scar.
This is no joke as a friend with unquestionable pedigree has spoken to the angler involved and seen a picture of the fish ( taken on a mobile phone ) this morning. Tight lines, Paul B |

Hope the angler had the sense to put a bank stick through it's head. This is bad news and the EA should be informed. Was something about a rumour of their
introduction on last years river report. I suppose some half wit thought it would be a great idea and has intoduced a strictly licensed species illegally with
out thinking of the wider reprocussions. The damn fish could be carrying all sorts of diseases and wipe out the existing fish stock. Hope they are proud of
themselves and lets all hope they weren't diseaed. Catfish are supposed to be only stocked in lakes with no possibility of ingress into rivers. Also heard
a similar rumour about someone introducing catfish in the Wear last year on the North Eat Fishing forum. Personally if I catch one it dies ,flame away if you
want but these things will have a devastating effect on fish stocks.

This could be a windup about the catfish ,but i disagree with killing fish just because there not supposed to be there ,it could of been in there for a while .
i and others doubt it will do much harm to the river as there are ample fish in it for it to survive without doing any damage to the fish population ,they
carnt breed in this country ,i do not agree with the illegal stocking of fish that may be diseased. who knows what new species will turn up in the uk rivers
and lakes with global warming ..
ps does anybody see advertisements on every other message on this thread ???? |
