Hi, thanks for all the replys. I must admit I have seen or heard of most of these suggestions and have been thinking along the lines of the hexagraph or
perhaps one of Bob's "Christmas tree rods" for a while now. I'm a liitle partial to a bit of carbon eye candy on those long evening blanks,
my greys prodigy rods are just so boring to look at. If anyone has one of the bfw or a hex and you regularly fish up at Radwell or sharnbrook please pm me as
i'd love to have a closer look at both rods. Once again thanks for all the replys.

Harrison 12ft 1lb8ozs tc, best Barbel Rods I have ever owned, use them for everything, with a sererate built in quiver tip.
Built by my old mate George Howell " RIP " Accounted for hundreds of Barbel, Big Carp, Chub and Tench. When ever I catch something using these rods, I think of George and know he's still smiling down on us !! Bob |

Re the Anglers Workshop link above, after many, many recommendations from other converts, I finally paid Kevin a visit pre season and spent 4 hours with the
guy discussing my requirements. His knowledge just blew me away! The end result was a fantastic custom barbel rod, built on his own Harrison blank and it cost
less than £150!

I have Rods built by Bob and Mark Tunley (Stalker and 1.75 Torrix) and have to say both are excellent bits of kit !
A friend bought a couple of Torrix from Ian a few weeks ago and they are absolutely superb too ! Another friend has Peregrines, maybe not so nice to look at, but they have a large following ! I think you will find most rod builders produce finished rods of a similar quality, as all the ones I have come across are superb craftsmen ! At the end of the day it's down to personal choice and what extras, touches you want....... Cheers Paul M.......... |

Another vote for Anglers Workshop...I got a pair of carp rods custon built for £160 each. Excellent build quality and not that expensive.

Well, taking into account everything else on the market, I'd have to say I think they are vastly overpriced for the performance they offer. Pretty though! Have a word with Kevin Baynes!

Had my I/Power made about 14 months ago a Great Piece of kit.
Would recommend 10/10 Maybe one day i will even have a pair.

A few months back, I was after a single rod for roving. I took my Crouch Pin and ABU Cardinal to local emporium.
One of the river anglers in said emporium volunteered to act as Barbel while I tried every rod with Pin and ABU. It took ages and surprised many shoppers as man gave twitchy bites, full blooded runs etc etc on the spooled up rods. The Marksman was amongst the rods discarded, seemed no better than the £100 Daiwa Twilight! Many thanks to Chapman's of Hull for acting as good sports for 90 odd minutes! The Free Spirit rods are better - much better, as are many of the Harrison blanks whether Peregrine, Kev Baines, Bruce Ashby or Bob Gill's. If it were to be ultra special, a custom built 1.25lb TC Hexagraph would be my preferred choice. B&W will build to your spec. Footnote: when I started carping in the 1970's the rods my brother and I lusted after were Hardy's and B&W - Mk IV Carp. Then, after much thought, I went the B&W route These days I would head straight in the direction of B&W.

Kev Baines at Anglers Workshop. This guy is the epitome of minimalist when it comes to rod building.
He believes that every turn of thread you put on a blank will alter the characteristics of that blank, consequently, when you buy a rod from Kev you get no frills, just top quality fittings on a class blank and top quality workmanship, and if you are looking for carp rods or, as I am, something to handle heavy feeders while still retaining a 'fishing action' then phone him first for a consultation and he will take you to his casting range with a selection of rods to help you find exactly what you need for your style of casting. He is also very reasonable, he replaced six fugi guides and a tip ring on a couple of my barbel rods during the close and charged me thirty quid which I thought was a bargain. |

If anybody reads this thread in the hope of learning which rod they should buy please be warned - there are few anglers that know a good rod when they see one
and very few people will tell you that they have bought a piece of !#%+.
We are all influenced by fashion and bling but that does not make a fishing rod any better for the purpose for which it was built. Also, fishing rods, reels even line is such a subjective choice one man's meat is most certainly another man's poison. I fish with rods of 11ft, why? I believe that you have a superior playing action and better leverage with a shorter rod but have found 10ft to be just too short on my local Wye. There are a few that agree but still the market runs with the 12ft trend that came in only because we had carbon that made longer rods possible and nobody seems to question the accepted standard. I've just started using a couple of Normark Nirvana's (got the pair for £150) that have abbreviated handles and look horrible compared to a nice bit of cork but they do a good job. I've got a light Harrison Avon that the expert selling his wears on ebay said would be too light for the Wye yet it has landed countless barbel to double figures and recently tamed a 26lb carp in a tight spot so what does he know? If anybody tell you they have the best rod for a certain species/method in the world tell them they just haven't looked far enough because there are loads of alternatives out there that do an excellent job, often for a lot less money. Spend the cash that would have bought all those whistles and bells on something useful. This is not a dig at Graham and his rods but about the people that spend a few quid on an over priced piece of average equipment then hail it as the 'must have' item of the year. Or maybe I'm just getting cynical in my young to middle age. |

I have just received a gray's x-flite barbel rod as a birthday present, i'm fairly new to barbel fishing but absolutely love it. it has 2 tops 1.5lb
and 2lb. i suspect the 1.5 is for slower/shallower rivers, while 2.0 is for faster/deeper rivers. it also came with a quiver top with a 2oz glass, 4 & 6oz
carbon quivers, on what occasions would you use the quiver top rather than the other 2. Thank you in advance for any replies.
Sorry, forgot to add, i live in Liverpool and usually travel down to the River Severn, Ironbridge or Brignorth areas. Thank You.

Ive got A 1 3/4 lb and a 1 1/4 lb torrix buit by Mark Tunley, and for the fishing i do they are excelent ive use them for barbel and carp and are up to both
jobs . They look brill with black whippings and full cork handles too . Now one of the reasons i picked mark to build my rods is that he lives "down the
road" so to speak so i gave him a call and drove over to see him. i then spent about 2 hours trying different blanks with different leads and discussing
actions and what purpose i wanted them for . I found this brilliant and Mark is very knowledgable and patient in my case lol . The rods were built and im more
than happy with them , so much so ive ordered another 1 3/4 lb so i will then have a pair for when i wish to fish 2 rods after tench carp barbel ,or whatever
swims my way . Bobs rods and build quality look excelent too but it was the local connection and the "try before you buy that" swung it for me and
ive not be dissapointed.
