Good luck Leon , I think conditions should be good for a barbel or two tonight . I have no idea where robin is on the space / time continuum , not only is he
in the wrong year but his posting times seem as little weird as well , I will have a quiet word with him poor fellow

Great fish mike, i am hoping to grab a session on ouse tomorrow. I am still a novice on ouse, and have only caught barbel on york stretch at park. Just bought
a leeds book though. Could you give me any advice on other stretches which hold a reasonable head of barbel?

Well done Mike, great start to the season.you make it sound so easy.
To all the guys trying so hard to catch a tommy ..I mean Barbel.Mr hodgkiss spends a great deal of time on the river and has years of experience so dont get to down hearted. I have been trying for years and still cant keep pace with Mike the Double!!! Fished last night nearly had the rod pulled in ..one suicide Chub!!! To put the record straight... I AM the undisputed Tommy King, having had the catch of such a fine specimen weighted and witnessed in the last competitive match held by the clique. And further for the record in 1974 (thats before the invention of the feeder and carbon rod for you young uns) I won a York youth club 3hour evening match with the grand total of 3lb 12 oz of specimen tommies...beat that Mr Bowes. River is bang on for Barbel at the moment good luck all. Ken. |

Begone, imposter! I'm the only Tommy King on the Ouse! I think you'll find I too had a fine specimen weighed in last year.
I also remember catching dozens from the slipway at the back of the Dawnay in Newton when I was a kid, around the same time as your supposed match win (do you have docmentary evidence?). Sept. 7th will sort the men out from the boys! R. |

TOMMY WARS | ||

Thats told him Ken , I can see the Ousemeisters fish in taking on a whole new angle [ sic ] ,2nd rods out for the tommys .. Current british record is a little
over 5 oz ,TK Bowes reckons he had a string of 4's as a child hmmm .. Anyway I am going to commit to donating a tommy ruffe shield for the biggest tommy [
by length , not weight ] caught at the next annual Ousemeisters barbel challenge fish in . I go for length ,as unless we are going to invest in a set of drug
dealers digital scales our reuben heatons and avons won't cut it and will lead to needless arguments and unseemly bankside fisticuffs . So you all need to
invest in a tape measure and a digital camera .As previously stated on this thread , there are still special prizes for any salmon , sea trout or shad weighed
in
As Ken says the Ouse looks spot on at the mo , as do the Nidd and the
Swale , I reckon a few good fish should come out in the next few days . Re doubles in the Ouse , they are still pretty rare creatures , but I have caught
quite a few big 8's and 9's in the past few seasons so inevitably there is going to be a fair sprinkling of 10's around by now . Having said that I
still believe that an 8 is a very good fish from the Ouse or indeed any Yorkshire river , it's all relative .What is very heartening is the obviously
increasing stock of young / small barbel this augers very well for the future .

another session on ouse today fished from 5 til 11 one barbel 6lb 10oz and my first ouse bream about 4lb rained all evening river looks well though approx. 2
foot up and never rose another inch even with all the rain?great fight from barbel was hugging bottom like it was going to be a big'unthen as soon as i
got it to surface it did a great impression of an express train, grand

Nice one Leon , you have located barbel , that is the key in a river like the Ouse with a relatively small barbel population . Bream ,well they are a bit of a
pain , but there are some big uns in the Ouse and when you get in the plus 7 pound bracket they are an impressive looking fish in a breamy ,slimy snotty type
of way ..

A mate fished Ouse wednesday evening. No barbs but bib fish jumped 2/3 times mid-stream. I have seen salmon nearby in the past, could it be?? Anyone had
anything similar?

Hello Henry , leaping salmon and sea trout are an increasingly common sight on the Ouse at all times of the year . Last season I saw salmon leap on 3 or 4
occasions ,one or two times at very close quarters , some huge fish . I recall a previous poster on here seeing a salmon or big sea trout leap out on to the
bank ![ ouse archive last season ? ] .I know of one person who seriously targets them on fly and lure . The runs of sea trout are fairly substancial and I have
seen large numbers of them going up the ladders at the weir .

Guys,
It's not often I doubt my decision to spend a weekend in the Lakes walking the mountains but you've got me wondering this time with all this talk of ideal river conditions and double figure fish! By the way, in my line of work we have balances that work to 0.0001g and so we could always settle the Tommy match with some degree of accuracy! Well, that's if we can find a 240V socket on the bank ........ anyone got a 500m extension cable? ...... Good luck this weekend - save some of the big 'un's for me next week! Steve |
