Sounds like a proper hard as nails yorkshire barbel Steve . How do the Ouse fish compare to their shandy drinking softie southern cousins down in the Cherwell
?

Mike
I'm embarrassed to say that at time of writing it's Trips 1 Chub 1 (not a bad one at 3lb). Barbel 0 (maybe they're too soft to come out!!). I think I've got a tougher time on the Cherwell to be honest. Trip 2 is planned for next Wednesday in a more likely spot with lots of glides, tree cover and a better track record for barbel, apparently up to 14lb or so. Now that would be nice!!! You may have noticed I'm putting in quite a bit of practice this season .... September 7th is looming!!! Cheers Steve |

I wouldn't bother practising Steve . Ken is bound to win it with a Tommy

Leon , it's a cut throat game tommy bashing , Ousemeisters are practicing already , a certain poster on BFW had a good ruffe out from a swim ' above
York ' last night , I have heard that maggot feeder is the way to go , unfortunately this is non selective and you can be troubled by nuisance barbel
!

Well,
[Damn, he beat me to posting!] I forced Mr Hodgkiss to eat his words last night - I caught my first Tommy of the season! Leon, I wouldn't bother trying for Tommys on the 7th - it will only end in tears.
So, anyway, I had a late 2-3 hours on the Ouse last night. It was a beautiful evening - falt calm, and lovely and warm. I didn't get started until about 10pm because I was late getting out and, when I did get there, I spent some time with Mike chatting. I managed a suicidal chub (~1.5lb), the aforementioned Tommy, and a snottastic slab (maybe2-3lbs). Still waiting to get started on the barbel this season. R. PS. Try a google image search for "Tommy Ruffe". Guess who's #1 search result???

Ouse conditions | ||
|
River approx 2.5 foot +NSL and steady , good colour with little debris , water temp holding at 57F . as the the tommy king ,[ or TK as he is known in the
dark world of Ruffe fishing ] stated ,conditions were very pleasant . As TK arrived I was thinking about moving on as little action when a couple of taps
developed into a good pull and I was in to a very hard fighting barbel ,beautiful stocky and unmarked fish which pulled the reubens round to 10lb 1oz , 2 casts
, 3 hours , one fish - happy days !

Indeed Leon , get out there . I debated if I should go last night as I was tired , but I followed my instincts to try for an hour or three and bingo , good
luck

Ah, perhaps that's why then! I was wondering whether my blank last night was due to the TK's four or five pints of maggots feeding up all of my fish
downstream of you! Just kidding!
Cracking fish Mike! I've sent you a pm. Steve |

Steve,
Don't be ridiculous. I never loose feed maggots. Maybe the 8 pints of hemp had some effect though? R. |

Robin,
My reference was on the understanding that you'd made a maggot feeder out of an old washing up liquid bottle. Too much Blue Peter me thinks? Steve |

I find that old beer kegs make good feeders - I use two at a time to make sure I get plenty in. Don't want Tommy to go hungry.

I hope the beer doesn't go to waste, particularly if Taylors Landlord or Black Sheep!

Is this barbel related ? 'Tommy fishing world 'would be a better forum for you types

Steve,
I find the beer makes a pleasantly refreshing drink on a warm evening. Bloody barbel - get in the way of the serious business of Tommy-bashing. R.

Ah ! Drinking beer while fishing for Ruffe , appalling behaviour , I think the TP [ Tommy police ] may well close in and stamp down hard . . Having said that ,
as Tommy King you are probably chief of police and can do what you like
