Hi,
I'm looking for a bit of expert advice to hopefully catch my first Barbel on a challenging river.
I have just started fishing the River Crane in Twickenham (a small tributary of the Thames), the river is not heavily stocked, but contains mainly Chub and
other smaller species, a handful of big-ish carp, but I know there are Barbel in there as they were stocked by the EA about 8 years ago.
Not having caught one before I have read some of the many excellent articles on this website for beginners on how to locate them etc. My questions are as
follows:
1. How can I target just the Barbel, Chub are the dominant species in the River which I keep catching, but I'm really after a Barbel is there a way to
maximise my chances of catching a Barbel over the Chub? Is there a particular method/rig/bait I can use to really focus on the Barbel?
2. I will be fishing the evenings 8pm-midnight using hair-rigged marine halibut pellet on a size 10 hook to an 8inch 15lb braided hooklength to 8lb mainline
with a lightish running leger. The swims I have chosen are fairly snaggy and I keep getting caught, are there any tips on how to avoid getting snagged and the
best anti-snag rigs?
Any advice would be really appreciated or please can you point my to any existing articles that may be helpful.
Thanks,
Robin.
