I'd go for a harrison rod if your budget will allow. I have two triptych's and they will meet almost every need - they are the three piece versions of
the chimera 2 I believe.
Of the shimano rods I would suggest the Beastmaster as the best pick. About £75 rrp I think... |

I've got a pair of Hyperloop XT's that have coped with Barbel to 12lb and Carp to 20lb. For the price at the time with 3 top sections they seemed great
value. No problems with them at all except for a cow chewing the top off one of the quiver tips one day, and i always felt they struggled with leads over 3oz.
They have been consigned to Chub and Tench sessions now, having acquired a pair of i-power's which if your budget allows..... Regards Richard

If the budget allows, you can't do any better than getting a couple of Harrison Torrix rods built. Not cheap but fantastic rods.

I've got a pair of the XT's too.
They have coped well with everything I've put them through, including big leads on a flooded Lower Severn. Good value too. Steve |

I have a pair of XT"s, IMO they are to floppy, no stopping power, and definately no good if you fish rocky rivers, that aside they do have a nice finish.

Ive had alot of barbel rod up to now, but got myself two tribal specialist heavy quiver rods
and have found them to be spot on. The blank is quite thin but has a lost of power behind it. Its a through action rod which means you can really give it some stick ! its the best rod Ive had so far, i think there around £190 each but may have gone down in price |

I have an i power available from this site. Great through action for playing fish that absorbs lots of the power from the fish. I also have a couple of the fox barbel rods which are great if you're on a budget. |

i have always found fox rods more than capable and upto the job, but perhaps even more importantly a joy to use!!
i've resisted the urge to buy my dream torrix as i'm always going through bushes/fences and rolling/falling down banks into rivers lol barbel rods take a lot of abuse and i know the hyperloop and nexave can really take it even if they aint the best rods

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Shimano XT it's a got a great through action and has taken all the abuse I have thrown at it.
I've never felt undergunned with barbel up to 11lb. If you are hurling huge feeders long distance on the Tidal Trent it will not be up to the job but if you fish smallish/medium rivers with leads up to 3ozs then it's fine. You can buy a pair for less than you would pay for some of the rods mentioned on here, a couple of reels as well probably. I would be heartbroken to pay a kings ransom for a rod only to break it. Unless of course you really are a Tackle Tart? Bill |

Apart from being to thin in the handle he original Fox barbel rod was a fine piece of kit in the 1.5 lb tc.
Since then they have gone downhill fast and I would only use them for bean sticks. A second hand Chimera II from ebay will cost you around a ton and imo you will never look back until you trade up to a Torix. |

I've fished with a couple of different types of Shimano barbel rods and found them to be very crude to say the least, cheap blanks made from poor quality
carbon and a finish that I'm sure make Bob Gill either laugh or cringe.
Forget Harrisons, they're overrated Forget Greys, they are very overrated Take a look at Free Spirit's, Peregrines or my personal choice Daiwa Infinity Barbel Special (or "Advanced") If you want a budget rod, take a look at Wychwwod, very good for the money CK |

Use Greys X-Flite,comes with a quiver section with 3 tips (2/4/6oz) a 1.5lb TC tip and a 2lb TC tip at 12ft,used them for all sorts,on the servern and
trent, also Bristol avon, method feder work for carp on certain ponds, and they've handled it all....
Also they come with a no-quible lifetime garuntee,I actually managed to snap the tip off the 1.5lb section transporting it,a quick phone call to greys £20 surcharge and courier a week later i had a shiney new section... If budget allows they are the best rods i've used so far and a few years ago I used to use Shimano Solstance rods which where ok but not a touch on the greys build quality... |
