hi again,i will be under a cloud if i dont put this up myself.i didnt tell a lie in saying that i have blanked since the start of the season, the reason being
is that i havnt been out fishing yet[cant tell you why]but i will be having a talk about this hair rig subject with a good angler who uses the very same rigs
as you and many others, and if it turns out that it is better or as good as the rig i am currently using then i will use it on my second rod,and see how it
goes.
must remember though to take a few snaps, this season[if i catch anything that is]as for the material itself and to save me buying some more they will be made up from drennan fly leader. i will get back to you on this and give you my results. honest derek. |

Wow,
I have read that flexible hair allows more natural movement of the bait. Not sure I agree unless very long. An advantge of long soft hairs is that if the bait is blown out the hook may not be which it would with rigid hairs. Or maybe this blowing out is when the hook %+#*+$ the fish lip with rigid hairs and helps hook ups. I have read that long hairs of any type aid hooking but have no confidence in them. I have also read of long hairs being picked up and ejected with the bait being outside the mouth (not good). I've read alot also on increased hook up percentages using shrink tube line aligners and rigid line in front of the hook. Maybe I read too many carp mags!!!! I've caught fish on flourocarbon knotless knot hairs and soft braid hairs. Personally with barbel I am more interested in the properties of the hooklink and in most cases fish flourocarbon with a knotless knot. This is because of the lower supposed visibility, less risk of tangling and that it sinks well. If I am concerned that the rig is not working due to visibility I may try a braid which matches the bottom or if I feel the rig is not working due to lack of bait movement I would try a combi rig. If there are fish in the swim and I am not catching then I will try something different. To get a truly natural bait requires some form of counterbalancing in my opinion or there will always be the weight of the hook to consider In summary I mainly use flouro with flouro hairs and the bait 1/4 inch from the bend and have very few reasons to change. Find them and get them feeding. These are the diffcult parts. Mark |

what I do is this, make a hair from fine braid, make it the length you want it, and tie an overhand knot cut the braid at the knot, then start to tie your
knotless knot after the first wrap lie the braided hair on the back of the hook and continue the knot. you will now have a fluro hooklink with a limp hair.

hi,mark the way i fish there is never no taps or twitches, just a wrapparound with the hair rig,and the same length hair as you and many others, and in the
summer on clear days i use particle baits,or tiny pellets,in autumn i change to boilies.

hi,alan i see your hair comes off the back of the hook, which is the same as me[forgot to mention that]but the only difference is i use 1lb mono.

I only use braid hairs because I have faith in braid as a hair, I forgot to mention that the reason I put a small knot at the end of the hair is to stop the
possibility of the hair pulllin from under the knot.

i use a supple hair for my carp fishing, but not all the time
it depends on lots of factors and ultimately the way the fish are feeding but barbel are totally different to carp , they have different feeding habits and have a completely different shaped mouth plus in my experience they have awful trouble ejecting my baits anyway, they seem to lift off the riverbed to try which ends up hooking them either that or they turn in the flow and do their best to drag my rod in i tend to take more time getting a feeding response rather than worrying about my rigs but as i use flourocarbon i do use a stiff hair

Interesting, I use berkley flouro and if I am using braid I prefer fox barbel braid. Ineresting theory about the stiffness of flouro. What is the best sinking
braid that you guys use does anyone know if fox do a sinking barbel braid I do not like using puttys and the like for sinking the braid.

hi,what would you do if a barbel picked your bait up into its mouth, wihout moving

Derek,
If a barbel did that with a short, stiff hair chances are it will also have the hook in its mouth and in a perfect position to hook up

I'm with Darren, and have posted about the benefits of stiff hairs many times int he past.
Fine supple hairs and a supposed 'natural' behaviour is rubbish, especially in running water. The idea of a supple hair is that The bait and hook seperate when a carp ejects the bait - but barbel feed in a completely different way and picking-up and ejecting of baits is more mechanical - i.e. manipulated by the lips, hence you absolutely dont want the hook and bait to seperate if the fish drops the bait... So its stiff all the way for me. Spent a fair bit of time with combi rigs of fluoro-braid and then a stiff hair on purpose last yr and it worked for me. 95% of the time its irrelevant though as barbel are pretty stupid Andy |

barbel are only stupid when they are feeding
when they are "havin it" you will hook them on anything in my opinion of course

Barbel are stupid all the time.
Anglers are stupid if they try to catch them when they are not feeding |
