I think you did well there Titus. I fished from 12-6 below Bridgnorth for only one Chub, spoke to all the other anglers there and they all blanked, Ive just
got back from a walk above bridgnorth and must have spoke to 15 fishermen, all of them blanked. I think the River looks in a sorry state, almost stale in parts,
ive booked the week off but dont know what to do tomorrow, maybe a rain dance?
Anyone know why we have a very low river but lots of colour? I dont understand where its coming from. |

Pritch,
I have fished the same swim on opening day for the last 12 to 15 years and I can't remember it ever letting me down. It's on the outside of a shallow bend and there's a gulley in the bedrock which is between three and feet wide, several feet deeper than the surrounding water and runs for about 30yds, the current is faster there than the rest of the bend and the fish seem to like it. I found it when I was a pup and my brother tried to drive a tractor across the river and got it stuck I think the brown stain in the water is an algal bloom and it can sometimes have a devastating effect on the fishing.

Well done Adrian, I'm planning to fish a similar type of swim this evening, hopefully for a result!
Old enough to know better....young enough not to care!

I know that Manchester Traveller is with a group at the Unicorn this week, opened his account with 6 fish to 8ib 12oz between 12.30am and 6am from the area.
Apparently the rest of "Barbel Alley" around Unicorn blanked last night apart from a few Chub. Tight Lines all.

Pritch you're telling me it's low a bloke ran his boat aground in my swim at severn stoke earlier!Don't know who was more upset me or him!Never
seen it so low, needless to say i blanked would've been nice to have some barbel to report for my first post on bfw! I've got the week off too going to
avoid the severn like the plague till we get some rain, will have to go get battered by chub on the avon instead!

Going to give it another go tomorrow.Last night night i had to stay put because i took a friend and he didn't fancy the idea of me going walkabout but
tomorrow i think its going to be a matter of taking the bait to the fish.
If any ones seen the river this evening is it starting to clear or is it still looking very coloured? Many thanks |

severn today | ||

Hi all,
Been out just above Bewdley today and it was hard going. Typical small barbel banker float swims produced just half a dozen up to 3lb ish but my bro' fishing some fast water had some lovely chub to finish with 20lb ish all on maggot feeder. Brown colour is odd though, the temp seemed very low too. Maybe when it runs off and warms up a touch it will return to form. Lets hope so. Oh well, Avon Wednesday! ATB Tom. |

Thanks for that Cronky.
I also saw the perch yesterday darting about i guess the smaller fish are running out of hiding places with this low River. Well done Deano, i didnt come across anyone else who caught yesterday from that stretch. |

pritch wrote: As Ade says, an algal bloom. it sucks the oxygen out of the water. The brown colour is it dying off, (when the bloom starts it's pea green) but the brown stuff is when it has the most evil impact onthe fish in terms of de-oxygenating the water. |

Happy New Season to all.
As seems to be the pattern everywhere, the Severn below Shrewsbury was in mean mood for me yesterday afternoon. Hooked a good-un early on but lost it to a hook pull after a couple of minutes - the gape came back twice as wide as it was when it went in. That particular packet of hooks has now been duly discarded.
Managed to land one of around 4lbs a couple of hours later. In full
summer colours and with the sun beating down the fish looked a peach.
Maggot fished in the faster water produced both bites - nothing on the pellet/boilie rod other than the odd chub rattle. Not a touch in the slower water. |

Got lucky and had a really scutty fish around the 5 mark. The most amazing thing about the day was the bream.....................
I had a scabby 6lber from a fast rock gully and Coops nailed about six of them from the bottom of the stretch. He also managed seven eels so, with the slow flow on the river it felt more like a days noddy basing on the Nene! Great to be back though, its the one day of the year when I don`t give a damn about actually catching! |

I was down there last night but didn't see anything.
There was a youth wandering about who looked a bit shifty and was going on about starting river fishing again, the fact that he jumped when I spoke to him and he was stood next to a tackle bag belonging to an angler who was spinning a few swims up was what made me suspicious, but you can read what you like into allot of things,. |
