I bet I'm the only person on here who thinks it's the finest comedy on telly at the moment, almost a Shakespearean tragi-comedy. Then you get a double
bill of Family Guy to follow. Does life get any better than this?

I thought Ideal was a documetary on urban Britain. Thought Family guy was just silly. ATB Harry.

I only saw a short bit of Ideal but it looks very promising. I don't do a lot of telly, but saw 'Black Books' recently and was impressed enough to
pick up the 1st series on DVD (for a fiver in the sales). The pupils rave about Family Guy, so will have a look.
Curently mid-Ofsted this week, so TV is a non-starter - 18 hour days, lots of stress etc ...so could certainly use a good laugh. regards Jon |

oh, and Pete - meant to say this a long time ago, but have you read Ginger Geezer, the Viv Stanshall biog? If not, you are welcome to borrow mine. Essential
reading about one of life's rare true originals.

Ideal must be coming to an end now but you really need to have seen the first two (or is it three?) series to understand all the running jokes. Cartoon Head,
for instance; I assume his mask was permanently attached to his face by arch-villain Stemroach, with some kind of industrial strength superglue. Fist started
out as an evangelical Christian plumber - don't ask. There must be more excellent character acting in one episode than you would get in a whole series of
other comedies. There are occasions though, when it is actually quite disturbing - the unexpected demise of Craig was slightly shocking.
This last series has been the best yet, but as I said, it helps if you have been following it all along. http://www.tv.com/ideal/show/26522/episode.html http://www.phill.co.uk/comedy/ideal/index.html I'll bet the viewing figures aren't astronomical and I can't imagine it ever being shown on either BBC1 or BBC2, but it is definitely a cult classic in the making. By the way, Black Books and Green Wing were also favourites of mine, but how many people have ever watched Man Stroke Woman? I will make a point of ordering Ginger Geezer this weekend. Edit: Thanks for the offer John but I have just ordered it http://www.play.com/Books/Books/4-/291051/-/Product.html?searchstring=ginger+geezer&searchsource=0 Half the price that it was on Amazon and with free delivery.

Curently mid-Ofsted this week, so TV is a non-starter - 18 hour days, lots of stress etc ...so could certainly use a good laugh.Floppy - don't you just yearn to stick your face about an inch from an Ofsted Inspector's flabby, jowly fizzog and snarl "Why don't you get a proper f***ing job!"

Paul - YES! Thankfully, they left on Thursday evening, and I can now relax and look forward to opening day, where my true 'serious weaknesses' and
'special measures' will be demonstrated all too clearly.
Staff meeting tomorrow at 5, Bristol Avon by 6, barbel by ten past.... all the best, Jon |

Swifty, think of the career structure. Headship in five years, ridiculously early retirement on a huge pension Followed by a part time job as.......An ofsted inspector
Or, if worst comes to worst.....Lecturing!

Steve, you're right of course, but the hard part, just prior to the Inspector stage, is attending the special, top-secret, alsations-guarding-the-gate
laboratory, where you undergo the final transformation....insertion of blasphemously-bad breath and fitting of poorly-cut grey suit.
I'll stick to teaching, which - against all the odds - I still love doing very much indeed. See you soon, I hope, and all best wishes for a cosmically-stupendous season. Jon (possible winner of 'post with the most hyphens 2008') |

I qualified as a teacher but ended up doing something else, as at the time I left college, there were about a hundred applicants after every job (in Art and
English anyway). When I go onto the website for my old college, the hatred and loathing felt for Ofsted inspectors is immediately apparent. I think quite a few
teachers have had breakdowns because of the pressure they are put under. And to think that most of them seem to earn less than a lorry driver.

One more year of 4 days a week part-time for me, then retirement. Hip, hip .......

I must have missed that one, but the one where Mrs Slocombe (the cat) brought in the severed hand was quite memorable, as was the Craigey/Cartoon Head
incident. It's the last one ever tomorrow night (or is it Tuesday?). I can't see how they can ever do another series now that Johnny Vegas is shedding
the weight so quickly.
I was quite surprised to find that gay Brian is played by Graham Duff, who co-writes Ideal and also wrote Father Ted.

Ah.... Graham Duff, a coupla years back he filled in on a local radio show called Totally Wired
The man has fine taste in 60's psychedelia. He's also responsible for
the wonderful Count Arthur Strong on radio 4

Ideal finished tonight, but hardly in the way I could have expected - quite horrific really. I was wrong about Fist as well, so now I will have to wait for the
repeats to watch the episodes I missed.
