Posts: 56 (30/04/08 16:20) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I'm hopeful that all BFW members are up to speed on the latest developments in the wider world of angling and that everyone has eventually come around to the idea that joining forces under one brolly is a sound idea. For any of you that haven't, then do please find out or ask for more info on the subject so that you know what's involved. If everyone who thinks that a unified voice for angling is the best way to secure our future sticks his hand in the air and says "count me in" then the path will become smoother for the people doing all the preparation & planning. It would be good to think that BFW (as the focal point for a large group of anglers) is fully behind the proposals for unification of the main angling groups and to this end can an approach be made to the A/U team to have BFW added to their growing list of internet-based supporters? But as always it's up to us to get involved and not rely on the same old few to do it for us. "Fish don't think. They react."

Posts: 258 (10/06/08 11:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've just been on a two day coaching course run by the Angling Development Board and there were 9 of us there representing both Coarse Game and Sea Angling. These guys were all experienced in their field and they all cared enough about angling to want to give of their time and money to put something back into the sport. We had an informal discussion about "Unity" during the lunch break and I can assure you that from what I experienced it's a non starter. The conversation started with us all being friendly to one another, but at the end of the discussion we almost had to pull people apart such was the level of animosity. Its all very well to talk about unity but is it really possible? To an outsider (ie government bod) Tennis, Squash and Badmington all look pretty much the same with a sweaty person demonstrating a desire to hit an inanimate object very hard, but in reality an overall governing body for all three would be nonsense. Did they think they had more money in the club bank account and that the 'poor boys' would get their hands on it? Did they think the riff-raff would be wanting access to their favoured stretch of water? Did the team lads think that the hoity-toity would come and buy up their local ponds? There is nothing to get upset about as far as I can see, maybe others can see further than me. I'm not sure that racket games are really a suitable analogy nor even the RSPB. I'm also not a fan of the term 'governing body' as it smacks of authoritarianism - obey all the rules that WE issue etc. with everything hyper regulated.The nearest is undoubtedly the umbrella organisation for our sister fieldsport of shooting. A department to nurture the up & coming youngsters, a department to look after the keepers who look after the shooting areas, one to offer it's profound knowledge of the equipment used (and to educate the police about it when they appear ignorant) a team for the highly public face of driven game shooting with it's royal links, a voice for all the individual marsh wildfowlers who maybe go out only several times a year...deerstalkers, women who want to get involved but don't know anyone to ask....the list goes on but also don't forget the fund raisers, membership recruitment sections, legal team and media/government liason staff. The main benefits that we as anglers need at the moment are, a united voice which will be heard in high level politics and a recruitment engine with sound backing for newcomers. The chairman of the game-fishers will probably carry on overseeing the gamefishing side, the guy who set up the youth education scheme will probably be involved in that same sphere but all will be working towards the goal of giving anglers some clout where it matters and safeguarding the future of our sport and they'll have the backing of the full team when they need it. It's time for the wise men to put their name on the list and let those who don't want to do so enjoy the benefit of the foresight of others until such time as they grow out of their parochial immaturity.

I think its a good thing to cure world poverty; but I do not think it will happen.............. Love Tinca

It's all about massaging egos, narcissism and self-satisfaction and less about foresight and fair-play. Still, I've always been cynical about authoritarianism people who innately feel the need to elevate themselves to the top of the pile Still, it'll be interesting to see what eventually happens. We ALL need to stand up and be counted, and until we ALL get this into our heads we will continue to be ignored. One woman is currently succeeding in getting fishing banned from Bewdley.... one woman. ask yourself why.... because 99.99% of us don't get off our backsides and do anything about it... how many off us are 'individual' members of the SAA? I doubt many can say yes. yet membership costs the same as a bag of readymades or 4 pints of maggots.....SAA.org yet we all start moaning when we lose a little fishing here and a little fishing there. It's time to get off our backsides and support the lads and lasses that sacrifice their fishing time to protect OUR fishing. Dave Smith

Dave Smith I think you find most anglers prefer fishing to politics its hard enough getting people to sit on a local commitee let alone get involved with "yet another commitee".I speak as a serving official of over 25 years its been tried many times before and each time failed.Why because pike fishermen are only interested in pike and anything that affects them.salmon and trout men in game fish and so on and so on. Its very much akin to pi**ing in the wind dont waste your time get out and fish.

It was nice to see so many in Bewdley this weekend, I had another engagement but wish I'd made more of an effort and and offered my support. Well done to Scuba and all other attendees... see we can stand together against a common enemy sometimes!

As the charitable status will make it very difficult for it to have a 'membership' as such, I just wonder how long it can survive, and more to the point, where will its current members go to get the benefits they currently enjoy if not within Unity. Makes the need for a single membership based organisation even more necessary and desirable. Another question; will the BS come on-board? I seem to recall there were some 'personality' problems blocking it's membership of the SAA, will these be overcome? If match anglers (NFA) and specialist anglers (SAA) can work together, surely so can other barbel, pike, chub and carp anglers?? You know it makes sense No disrespect to you, John, but I feel that you simply do not know - or fail to understand, perhaps - the true nature of the Salmo salar and better-rivers wild brownie beast: people who, at discreet people-like-us-only fundraisers, can raise tens of thousands of charitable pounds for the Cause without even breaking sweat. The Salmo etc chaps have only "gone" because they know that they can - once again - survive and prosper without people (like us, you and me, "cheapo" chub and dust 'n' ashes coarse and freebie salty types) who they (very discreetly again and "Strictly among ourselves") feel extremely queasy about and, in many cases, privately despise. They believe, now, that they know which the way the political wind is really blowing, and know that old friends in newly won High Places will once again listen to them in a year or two. Maybe. Maybe not. Takes one to know one and just what "We" are capable of, please believe me. This from Paul Boote, not The Chairman, a communication sure to reduce my Received Christmas Cards List (Posh Section) and Posh Fishing Invitation Calendar to something a lot lot worse than mere Year Zero. But, hey, what the heck, it needed to be said - must be said, regularly - even shouted until a few more Real Anglers wise-up and Angling as a pastime (rather than as a Fieldsport and a highly profitable sub-branch of upmarket Estate Agency) is assured a long-term, democratic future. Here in Britain, though, we're all effed until the Posh Set really wakes up, has properly got the pong of the coffee and truly rejoins the Human Race. Don't bank on it. I have lived/fished amongst our adipose friends (we don't want those $loody things [grayling] in our waters, we're a game club??) for the best part of 40 years. I also know that more than 'odd' fluff chucker is getting his tweed nickers in a twist about only being able to stock triploid trout into their beloved waters.( new EA Brown Trout Strategy) There are a lot of very unhappy S&TA members out there. The former Secretary of the biggest game club in my region recently said that he'd received more help and information from NAFAC in just one month than the club had received in over 20 years from the S&TA. Most clubs only hear from them when raffle tickets are being sold. My club is a S&TA member (were?) and that is our experience. Posts: 37 (06/08/08 22:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	If people go into it expecting the World for 3/4d (that's three shillings and four pennies for the young ones, nearly17p) it definitely won't work The RSPB charge £34 for a years membership and have about 1m members, and have had a relative income for donkeys. That's why they can buy waters and ban fishing on them. Personally I would like to see an all inclusive membership/rod licence fee, a well paid Chief Executive and professional staff. Anglers (coarse) have had cheap fishing and representation for years, far too many years. I can remember when the NFA wanted a 5/- year increase in subs and it was thrown out. Continue with that thinking and angling will deserve to be at the bottom of the sporting pile For those who say it will be too expensive and anglers won't join, work out the cost of a three day session and then say you cant afford to have a really effective governing/representative body, we can't afford NOT to. I want an effective organisation that operates like a business, not like a charity, that will be open to investigation and deliver value for money. After seeing a local charity investigated showing an income of over 400k and the 2 employees, husband and wife paying themselves 350 k of it a year I'm a little cautious. Peter.
