The local council are looking at banning angling in Bewdley town centre due to a complaint from the lady who runs the swan sanctuary at Worcester, who has said that Swan are suffering lead poisoning. Now we all know that lead shot, other than "dust shot", has been illegal for a number of years, and I cant for one second think that many people use dust shot on the Middle Severn. Most use big leads or feeders. There is a demonstration organised for Sunday 22nd July at 11am on the town bridge. She also needs to show evidence that shot larger than a No8 were found in the birds. In addition she will have to show that these birds came from Bewdly. If she is able to satisfy all the above criteria then I'm sure she would be only too happy to join with the anglers to find out which tackle shop in Bewdly is selling illegal shot and assist in its prosecution. Angling put its house in order many years ago with regards lead shot and the council in Bewdly (as well as Swan Woman) need to be made aware of this. Love Tinca

A local angler was saying that there are a lot of large visible carp in the area coming up for the bread chucked in for the ducks and swans and they weren't allowed to fish. I may be wrong but is this the same woman. Trying to cut us out town by town I think. John

What we do know is that two councillors have been given the job of looking further into the issue and reporting back. They are Mrs J. Adams and Mr J Foulkes. Councillor Adams submitted a report to the may council meeting on the issue. I will try and get hold of a copy and publish the releveant parts. We also know that the Town Clerk has written to the Land Registry to inquire into who owns the fishing rights on Severnside south (The main remaining free bit of fishing in Bewdley). There is talk that the proposal is to ban fishing on both banks from the gas works down to lax ford - a much bigger stretch of water. Tom

Just what is it about Swan Women? I have long had a theory about them, how they fall in love with the big white birds and use that bird-love to fill the huge vacuum of their unloved (by fellow humans) lives. His is the fishing shop/museum next to Bewdley bridge. His maggots have got me out of trouble on a few occasions when I have made a last minute decision to go out. If he shuts down because of this then it's a hike over to Stourport or Kidderminster for your bait and he has better opening hours than either of the latter.

Posts: 88 (12/06/08 12:26) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	This isn't going to be a popular angle with the do-gooders but what is most frustrating is that (as Des Taylor mentioned in this weeks AT) there are now far too many swans in Bewdley town centre. The small stretch of the river directly above and below the bridge is rife with them. They can be aggressive, are a pain in the ars* if you have small children with you when they approach you for food and have covered sections of the footpath and grass at Dog Lane car park with slimy excrement. The only reason they are there is because they are overfed by (mostly) daytrippers. They need relocating. Forget a ban on angling in the town centre, the ban should be on feeding the swans white bread, chips and other rubbish and this should be policed by people like Jan Harrigan who claim that the birds welfare is their interest. Posts: 7941 (12/06/08 18:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Maybe it may help to remind the swan fanatics that we anglers have always had wildlife especially swans interests at heart, they may be a lot worse off it angling opinion turned round full circle and had opposite attitude, car crashes kill HUMANS but they dont ban the use of cars on the roads! so casualties happen to all species, why do these people think swans should be different, i aint saying they should suffer casualties but some will, whether with or without angling! s how me any decent angler that would just sit there and do nothing if they saw brutality put upon any waterfowl, well how many would suffer if we wasnt there thus leaving damage to happen unchecked! going down the river to chuck a few crusts in for an hour a week or two wouldnt deter perpretrators, in fact without our presence on the banks i imagine certain wildlife would grow in population to savage the waterfowl undisturbed, give the fanatics a strong reminder about who the REAL protectors of our banksides are.....j.w
