Back to it's usual slow state!! Not getting much time in now and not likely to as my nuptuals are pending!!! Ohhh errr missus!! Phil

Still up by 6" or so, 58deg at dawn. Caught a bream and Andrew caught quite a few bream plus a tench. All decent fish without being stunning.

Posts: 724 (30/05/08 15:29) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	A long slow stretch of The Medway, deeep in places, down to the Barrier is on the ticket and flows right by the lake, (and Haysden and Barden lakes), when it isn't flooding into it. Good stretch for chub, roach and I've heard tell some good perch, and pike fishers target it too. Only managed the chub myself.. whatwife

Longfield is a lovely water. A decent walk means that you always have plenty of swim choices, the kingfishers love the place and it produces decent bream/tench/pike/eels on its day. It's equidistant from Haysden and Endsfield Bridge so take whichever route you fancy!

The club did stock it with carp a couple of years back but I guess they just swam away when it flooded as is their want. Still a head of carp there but question whether they are worth targeting.

I am getting ready for my first barble and have been getting rigs ready I may have to drop retro as I prepare braid hairs these all being new to me anyway a question are in line bolt rigs appropriate or indeed sensible in the wier at ashurst

Posts: 725 (30/05/08 21:26) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Looking at The Medway lunchtime today, down by Ensfield Bridge on my way back from a one Bream (4.12) attack on the Tench at Longfield Lake, the 2 foot up and pace and cholcolate colour just didn't make me feel good when I usually welcome floods. My thoughts were about the knobbled last season of chub and barbel I had, and attributed to the several early summer floods we had back then. I know it wasn't the same for others on The Medway, but that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. I'm anxious I'll see a repeat this season, which is why the levels and colour just put me right off. I suppose the debris will all have been washed through though. Time to dust off those other tickets again I think.... retro, I find running rigs work in that area, and have a natural bolt rig effect with the pace and against the rod-tip. With bolt-rigs proper I invariably struggle with the supposed release explanation and it's effectiveness. With in-lines you will get snagged up a lot. Try out the various running-rig release links, or a rotten bottom on the ledger. Some guys use small weights or large shot on link-ledger of line secured, and hence easily pulled off from, float stops. whatwife

Whatwife, No need to charge about. I remember meeting a chap on the Kennet some years ago, about midday if memory serves me right, who said that he had been on the Dorset Stour the previous night and was thinking of moving on to the Severn that evening. Obviously he preferred driving to fishing and fuel, especially diesel, was not quite as expensive then as it is now. I do not have the reel on free spool or use a Baitrunner; it is on a tight clutch setting. I do this for two reasons. First, I have to concentrate, and second, to me, the bite is everything. I never tire of that sudden wrench on my finger and the irresistible plunge of the rod top as a big chub or barbel takes the bait and makes off with it." I could not have put that better myself. Posts: 726 (30/05/08 22:28) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Trundled a certain weir last season Ray Walton style on 2 seperated days when I had the whole place to myself, using plasticine on the line and a lump of Spam (go on, sue me), not the same lump of course, of spam or plasticine. And that's the point; plasticine is great in snags. I think I got caught on a snag once or twice over both the days, and didn't even loose the hooks, which came back bent. Being a member of both banks, I gave the place a thorough search out of all the nooks, crannies, runs, etc,, and not once did a barbel deign to respond to my request... whatwife ps and another reason Tony Miles uses the one finger method is that the sudden wrench wakes you up if you nod off.
