I'd have opted for grayling, sea trout or gudgeon had they been options. If gudgeon went 10lb, I'd definitely fish for them all the time, such fghters
and such beautiful fish.

Not in the poll, but if you really want your string pulled, try a decent size tope on a 3lb TC stalking rod, true raw power, but in the poll, salmon.

unfortunately not listed yet lb for lb i would not hesitate to opt for the Lady of the Stream,
if She grew to 10lb`s+ i dont doubt for a moment that most of us would be posting on Gfw, have, for the very few i have landed, been quite disappointed with the Salmon, strong initial run upstream and very little left afterwards, quite dissapointing for me and most certainly a victim of the Hype, have had a few river Carp, (17+), they certainly fight better than there stillwater brethren, yet most of the fight though is of a stubborn circle (if the swim has depth) in front of the rod tip untill the fish tires, which, invariably, is only a few short minutes, for sheer dynaminism and determination in avoiding the net then ole Barbus floats my boat each and every time, never ever disappointed with that rush of adreniline that accompanies and follows the tap tap Bang. |

it has to be a gudgeon ,they are stronge for there size ,minnows if they were bigger would just be like chub ,stoneloach if they were bigger they would deffo
fight hard ,but the gudgoen has to win ,river carp fight hard ,my last river carp was 11lb and it did fight till it was in the net .
Grayling on lite gear fights very well as do small barbel ,,id rather catch small grayling and gudgeoen than have a day after roach ,skimmers ...anyday |

The hardest fighting fish Ive caught pound for pound is no doubt a Tuna (image a 30lb Mackerel on course tackle) Freshwater it would be Catfish, Ive had river
carp too over 48lb, Barbel on 6lb line too 13lb and they don't compare to Cats. A 20lb Catfish fights like what we imagine a 40lb Carp would.

I have had a fair few river carp and they do fight incredibly hard, its a tough one though. I'd go with Barbel...

in the same environment pound for pound at say 10lb
on the same tackle carp would +##@ all over barbel any day of the week |

For me it is river carp over barbel anyday of the week.
Catfish are stronger still. They all pale in comparison compared to some of the saltwater species - particularly Jack Crevalle |

Cant believe somebody voted for pike above barbel....

Take size out of the equasion, nowt goes like a Sea Trout, size for size will out pull, out run, out jump, out dive into snags, out rip your hands off at the take
than any other fish.Salmon tend to run and use any current to their advantge,Barbel go for the snags every time, sorry but Carp are common and boring(wot a snob
eh?) never fished for the @#%%@ cats .Thing is am very happy to catch any of the first three, enjoy the chase as much as the capture, caught Barbel on the 16th
and Sea Trout the last three nights running. Will vote for Salar tho. as my chances to fish for them are limited nowadays so are savoured that bit more, can
never totally exclude Nidd Barbel tho.Pedro.

If difficult to vote when half of the good fighting fish aren't on the list. Also its all relevant to the tackle being used. I've had a 40lb English
cat on a 3lb test pike rod and the fight was awesome but, never the less, a big grayling hooked on light trotting tackle in a fast flowing river will equally
get you pooing your pants. A big tench on a barbel rod can be every bit as feisty as a barbel of a similar size - maybe less aggressive in it's first run
but more dogged in the long run. And as for pike, well I defy anyone to go and fish the big Irish Loughs for them and after having their string pulled by a big
un or two, tell me they don't fight.

I would agree with Chris large Irish loch Pike are about aggressive as they get... They hit as hard as anything and they are fast... Even with English Pike Ive
had a few epic battles on some waters at the right time of year in the past. Now we fish with alot stronger tackle rightly in most cases this shortens the
fights.

Just voted barbel. I cannot comment on salmon or river carp as I have yet to catch one.
I also agree with the previous posters, as trout and grayling on light trotting tackle can be very interesting at times.

Maybe Tench should have been included as an option in the vote - for me, pound for pound they;d have my vote.
