Saw a good net earlier - looked big enough although 24" - i found it hard to judge without a 10lber in it

I do a bit of night fishing and have found that its alot better at night landing fish with a 32in net.
Ive lost fish by messing around trying to get them in a smaller net |

I have both a 30" and a 36" for barbel, but I favour the bigger one these days

I think it depends where you fish, but for places like the Kennet or Loddon then a 36" triangle. Just make sure you get a decent handle, a strong stiff
handle makes life a lot easier.
Cheers Paul Just to give you an idea this is probably the best pic I could find of a fish against a 36" net. Not a huge fish but I don't think you'd want to go a lot smaller with the net. Nets always look a lot bigger in the shop. .

The picture in my avatar is a 10lb fish in a 24'' net caught just before the season end. I was targeting chub on light gear so took my smaller net ( I
ususally use a 32'') I found it quite difficult to land and would definately not use the smaller size if I was targeting barbel.

Best advice I can offer is the actuall requirements for the net, as ben clearly display's you can land good size fish in smaller nets, however as Alan
states a larger net is more practical for recovery of barbel, remember a barbel is a reasonablylong fish for it weight and trying to get an eight pounder to
recover when its all bent up in a small spoon is not good news.
IMO a 36" triangular net is the way forward, take a look at the Korum net, it comes with a 6' handle and soft mesh for £19.99, very good value. However although my recomendations of a triangular net are suited to my fishing conditions, if you are fishing fast water then a large spoon would be better suited, Fox do a range of spoons to suit most conditions. I also like to use a net float, this helps when placing the net in the water whist playing the fish knowing its not going to sink or be pulled inwith the flow. Hope this helps atb Dave C
Today is the tommorrow - You are worried about yesterday - but all is well..

Cheers guys - i'll stick with the larger net after all the recovery of the fish is far more important than me having to carry a larger net!!

I,ve tried all sorts, but prefer the 36" triangular nets, plenty of room for resting a fish, mines weighted in the front corners, so that the mesh doesn,t
float, useful for that first fish of a session.Darn site easyier to cart about than a large round type, they seem to catch every bramble, or stray branch
going!

Why not a triangular 42"? Is it because of the intrinsic link to carp fishing? I've recently bought one, and I'll be using it this coming season.
Mind you, I like the look of the large oval net in Phil's post.

42" nets are OK, but in a decent flow they can become a big problem to handle, especially on your own, fighting the fish and your landing net at the same
time is no-fun, seen a few people lose fish and get into a real mess trying!!

Peter - yes, I hadn't thought of that. My local rivers nothing like the severn, trent etc so I should be ok. Thanks for the info though.

I had a 42' net which I stopped using because of the problems mentioned above in fast flows.
I found the major disadvantage was the handle length, so I am trying out the Korum 30' spoon this season. http://www.tackleuk.co.uk/korum-barbelspecimen-spoon-net-p-4446.html I purchased the Korum spoon because it was the easiest to get hold of locally, I think the Gardner spoon may be a better net.
